Motorcyclist fatalities 9% increase

Post by Hot_Air »

Sadly, biker fatalities increased by 9% in 2024—the highest increase for any road user category. Has motorcycling become more dangerous? Why?

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistic ... mates-2024

In contrast, cycling fatalities decreased by 2%. But it may be that reflects fewer miles cycled. It’s hard to tell from the report.

Anything to do with the general feeling of entitlement seen around the general public ??

"I have the right to ride here so you have to look out for me" - not the other way around??

(I see it with skiers and boarders, why not bikers :( :( :( :( )
Life is for living. Buy the shoes. Eat the cake. Ride the bikes. Just, ride the bikes!! :bblonde:

KSI is the more meaningful stat. The difference between K and SI is mainly down to luck.

of the 4 main road user types, the road user type with the biggest estimated percentage change for 2024 compared to 2023 for fatalities was motorcyclists, which showed an increase of 9%

of the 4 main road user types, motorcyclists had the biggest estimated percentage change for 2024 compared to 2023 for all casualties, which showed a decline of 6%
Could it be that there were more bikes on the road in 2024 than 2023?

@Trinity765 both really good points (bikes on the road & distance travelled).

I've seen data ... Somewhere ... on under age and unlicensed riders, it's quite a lot

@The Spin Doctor any extra information?

Would be useful to know the types of crash too.

Maybe related to COVID lockdown, after lockdown the number of new license increased. Can't remember where i readed something like new riders tend to hurt legs/feets while more experienced riders tend to more severe injuries or death when changing bike.
Obviously it might have more factor, did the ammount of motorcycle rammed by cars also increase?

Might be interesing to know the average ambulance responce times for those periods as well.
When my mother had a suspected heart attack (later turned out to be an aneurysm and it killed her) and my sister from Australia was visiting her phoned for an ambulance.
We were told to bring her in ourselves as the responce time would have been about an hour. So my wife drove over to her house then took her in.

Could be a factor although I suspect electric bike riding charvers (who aound here are a danger to themselves and anyone close) will be the main difference.

Quite an important point.

Unfortunately, many bike crashes are on rural roads, often at high speeds. Running out of talent mid-corner, and over-optimistic overtaking.

So further away from areas where ambos are more likely to be, so longer response times.

And likely further to travel to a major trauma unit.

Do these stats differentiate between balaclava wearing unlicenced idiots riding motorcycles & licenced motorcyclists?
There seem to be a few of the unlicenced types making the news at the moment.

I've noticed that the FWB (for the want of a betterer term) this spring have been riding faster / more aggressively than usual, one damned nearly got taken out last week filtering at speed past slow traffic, crossing the double solid white lines in the face of oncoming traffic that's doing 60.

A biker was killed in the forest last weekend and FB comments said that they'd been riding like absolute loons just before the collision.

... And ...

Couple more things about this.

First is that there's recently been a lot of research on trauma care, including immediate post-collision care.

Supporting this, for riders there's Biker Down and for commercial drivers, Driver First Assist.

Without more in depth analysis those stats really do shed very little light as to what is going on 😕

Pre Covid it was rare to see many bikes/scooters in Harrow. Since Covid Deliveroo, Ubereats, Just Eat etc scooter riders are all over the shop, standards of riding are generally as you'd imagine. That's just Harrow across London there must be a shed load more delivery scooters than there used to be, I doubt they help the numbers.

The closest I’ve come to crashing recently is due to the state of the road.

Potholes, tramlining of the surface or piles of chips on bends.

I reckon it’s 10 to one those happening rather than the actions of another road user.
