I'm struggling to remember, I did some serious research maybe 10 years ago (I some how bought a Transalp instead). The EVO is more faster and gets monoblocs so is more slowerer too.

I think the thing to do with this generation of Ducati is to always have a grand sat in a slush fund not to be spent on anything else as a kind of safety net, and not to get too upset if you have to spend it.

Have you priced up a belt change?

I've done the aircooled sohc belts before, but never a water cooled twin cam, in theory it shouldn't be too different, except instead of using a 5mm allen key to check the tension, you need a guitar tuner

IIRC the Ducati belts are made by Gates, if you can find the Gates parts number they're load cheaper than the official Ducati part.

The new stuff, since Audi took over, is supposed to be very good and servicing is reasonable.

I'd go for something with high bars but that's just my preference (in middle age!). That said the 848 looks stunning.

I had a very similar itch early in the year. Phoned dealers, sat on bikes, but in the end I couldn't let go of what I've got in the garage and the cream worked a treat.

Not quite the same comparison but the missus has a Scrambler 800 and I have an MT09. My MT090 has a Nitron shock and fat boy appropriate springs front and rear. The Scrambler is still the more fun bike to ride IMO and as much as I love the engine and look of the MT09, the Scrambler is just better - looks better, better to ride across a wider range of speeds and environments, sounds better...

Well that was the same 848 and was pretty special as it was an ex-cup bike, so it had everything and anything on it.. it was a bloody lovely thing and i rode it at Portimao for 3 days as well as the usual UK stuff.
I think the big service was why it was sold because as you say above it was the best part of £1000 to get that.. But i was happy that i spent a decent amount of time on the bike and we had a lot of fun.
