Land Rover discovery 3/4

Anyone with any experience of disco 3/4s can tell me if the additional fuel cost of the v8 is worth paying for in exchange for better reliability over the diesel? I was looking at lpg but it seems that it’s becoming less available. I do very few miles by the way. Thanks.

I had a 2.7 v6 diesel disco3, and it was thristy. I would think the v8 petrol will just drink the fuel.
I would be more concerned with the cost of road tax and would check before buying either as you may get a shock.

For the age I’m after they’re both about £400. The later ones are over £700.

If you do decide to go for one, be aware the repair costs are high.
Unless you have the diagnostic kit to clear and reprogram new components to the car yourself,then expect to pay a premium.
I sold mine after having to replace the air suspension compressor and the complete electronic handbrake control, cables and actuator in the same year.
Mine had 42000mls when I changed it and was only 4 years old.
I had the diagnostic kit for reprogramming and did the repairs myself but the running costs were just to high.The compressor and the handbrake assembly cost me around 1.5k just for the parts.The other cost was when I was repairing my car, I was not getting any of my paying customers cars done, therefore not really free repairs as still costing me money.
I would not recommend anyone buying one unless they have a good warranty

I'm planning on getting the gap iid tool to help me with problem diagnosis. I'm not expecting it to be particularly cheap to run and I know it'll be more of a hobby than transport if I'm being realistic. However that's also kind of what I want. They seem interesting enough to warrant the hassle. I watch LR Time quite a bit and although it makes the cars look like they'll suck up all my spare time it's inspired me to get one.

Baffles me why anyone would deliberately set out to buy an unreliable thirsty old car, with high tax and odds for it to get nicked, that's impractically large for most cities. Unless you're actually going off road, but even so, there are Toyotas and Mitsubishis etc. for that which I imagine will be more practical by any metric.

Still, you do you and I'll keep on keeping on in the Honda Jazz hybrid. Or the wife will, anyway.

We just bought a Jazz for SWMBO'd...she loves it....I have a shitbox Clio Campus (yes, the very basic interim model) that replaced the V50 after the local garage killed it, and the LE. Cars are like wimmen....go for the one you like, it's your choice. On that basis, I am not too sure what the clio says about me......

I mainly want the discovery to solve the requirement of getting around comfortably with 4 people and 3 dogs so I'm not sure that would work. I don't think that many other cars can do this other than vans and I don't want another one.

No I don't, they rot out something terrible.

Also I went in a more modern range rover once and considering how big they are on the outside, they're surprisingly small on the inside. The discovery felt much bigger.

Yep, you've got it.

More to the point we should buy vehicles appropriate to what we'll use them for. My wife uses hers to drive a few km across town to work and for the school run each day so an automatic hatchback is perfect. But with the X dogs and Y people bit it sounds like that's what you're doing too. Even if there must be smarter choices available, sounds like this one suits you.

Still, you're right to prepare for a lack of sympathy when the air suspension, or some other computerised doodad quits on you
