The worlds most boring drag race?!
The performance is obviously there but isnt it strange without engine and exhaust noise!

One of our guys did a "Deep Dive" presentation yesterday on the noise work he's been doing recently. The 1000bhp car we're putting on sale next year is quieter inside at 70mph than a Library

One of our neighbours has a Taycan S but no home charger. Reckons it quicker to pop over to the local Porsche dealer as they have some super-turbo charger system - says by the he's gone in and grabbed one of their fancy coffees and drank it, his car is pretty much charged.

t’s only been four days since we officially opened our Winchester Superhub and yesterday, it was at capacity - with all 44 bays on site in use simultaneously.
Why is this important? Because grid constraints is something I often see referenced as a barrier to progress, when it comes to the growth of EV infrastructure. With our site at Winchester, we’ve shown exactly what can be achieved through innovation and the deployment of the right technologies.
Through a combination of solar PV and battery storage, the site is capable of meeting the charging needs of all 44 vehicles, with just a sub 1MW grid connection. And even on a very overcast day (because yes, solar generates in all conditions).

What's the generation rate at night or when the panels are covered in snow?Mr. Dazzle wrote: Sun Mar 30, 2025 12:34 pm LinkedIn again...

It's got a 4MwH battery. 44 EVs all charging at 160Kw will deplete that in less than an hour. So if it's busy overnight you'll be charging from the grid. At about 23Kw. Best hope it's not busy.Mr. Dazzle wrote: Sun Mar 30, 2025 12:34 pm LinkedIn again...

Similar to our local Tesco. A few times recently it's run out of diesel, or had various pumps out of use.Saga Lout wrote: Sun Mar 30, 2025 3:34 pmSo if it's busy overnight you'll be charging from the grid. At about 23Kw. Best hope it's not busy.

So go to Morrisons or Sainsbury's or Esso or BP or Shell or Jet or Gulf or Texaco or Asda. (Did I miss any?)Horse wrote: Sun Mar 30, 2025 3:38 pmSimilar to our local Tesco. And you don't need a separate app for each one.

Yeah, and what happens if the sun goes out eh? Or an earthquake disturbs the panels or it rains black paint or if all the local vampires pitch up at 2am to charge their electric hearses or......whatever.

It doesn't matter, because all of these charging stations that get built never get usedCount Steer wrote: Sun Mar 30, 2025 3:57 pm Yeah, and what happens if the sun goes out eh? There's isn't an EV on the market which I can think of that's able to charge at 160kW for an hour BTW. They'd all be full in about half that time. So the likelihood of 44 vehicles charging at 160kW for an hour solid is well....basically non-existent. They probably knew that when they specced the systems.
Most EVs don't even exceed 100kW charging capability, although some do.
Most will in future, but the beauty of this kind of station is that if/when that happens they can easily increase the size of their "buffer" battery. They haven't now cause it's money they don't need to spend.
You don't need a separate app for chargers either, "they" outlawed that.

88 EVs charging for half an hour each?Mr. Dazzle wrote: Sun Mar 30, 2025 3:58 pm

I didn't know that. But I can "charge" my car to 500 or 600 mile range in 5 minutes, and I don't even need to use an app because, you know, cash or credit card. How old fashioned am I?Mr. Dazzle wrote: Sun Mar 30, 2025 3:58 pm You don't need a separate app for chargers either, "they" outlawed that.

Re: Would you have an electric car if you had the money for a new car and were in the market for one?
You don't need an app at all to use EV chargers, new ones (which is 99% of them) have to accept contactless card payments by law. I suspect the number of people who prefer cash and also own an EV they need to fast charge is somewhere in the negative numbers.
The same laws also mean chargers have to publically share their status and pricing.
This is yet another one of those "if it's obvious to you" scenarios.
I know the next argument is going to be "the battery still needs to charge from the grid", which true, but by the time everyone needs to charge at 150kW all the time there'll be a lot more stations.
This is yet another one of those "if it's obvious to you" scenarios.
As above, the "average" charging power of vehicles on the road today is still reasonably low. The number of EVs which can accept even a 100kW charge is still fairly low, but climbing quickly. It's easy to add more battery capacity to a station like this when the time comes.

My van takes enough diesel for 500 miles, it takes me a month to drive that far though.Saga Lout wrote: Sun Mar 30, 2025 4:48 pm I can "charge" my car to 500 or 600 mile range in 5 minutes, and I don't even need to use an app because, you know, cash or credit card. How old fashioned am I?

If you look at it another way, I've had mine 4 months and 5k miles now and I haven't had to go to a petrol station for a fill up once. Thats 15 mins a week for 12 weeks, 3 hours.Saga Lout wrote: Sun Mar 30, 2025 4:48 pm

It's spent a total of 40 minutes on external chargers. One of the times I was charging outside a decathlon that I wanted to mooch round anyway. The second 20 mins I did have to wait while it charged as it was 4 in the morning near manchester airport. I drank coffee and browsed RTTL while it went from 45% to 90% (£22).
I'm certainly not an EV fanboi and I know they won't suit everyone's driving habits, but I bet they suit most people's.
If you're unable to charge at home though I think they're a non-starter at the moment.

As above, there are loads parked on my street not charging, so they're clearly a starter for some people.
I'm guessing they charge at work but that's exactly that, a guess.

One charging point per house seems a bit of overkill in some places. I wonder if we'll get 'local community' charging points where people club together and install one, get a good tariff deal, and have a booking system.
Could work in some blocks of flats.

Re: Would you have an electric car if you had the money for a new car and were in the market for one?
Home charging is an issue for many. A lady I know has a EV from work but she lives in a row of Victorian terraced houses with only on street parking. The chances of her getting parked outside her own house is rare to say the least so she has to go to charging station or charge on site if possible. Her next car will be a hybrid because of this. I guess there will have to be charging points installed down such streets eventually, if its not already happening?
