Not a car you'd wash and stand there gazing in admiration at, but looks very practical as a budget EV as I suppose?

I was on the Octopus app this morning and got reading some EV leasing deals. Think the little Dacia Spring could be had for 200 summot £ a month, forget now, but said range was only 100 miles. OK for some maybe.

Also, they threw in a home charging installation for free.

https://unionrayo.com/en/byd-vs-tesla-e ... fficiency/ (extracts)

The research, published in Cell Reports Physical Science, thoroughly analyzed the two technologies setting the pace: BYD’s Blade Battery and Tesla’s 4680 battery.

BYD’s Blade Battery uses LFP (lithium iron phosphate) technology. This chemistry is not new, but it is very effective: although its energy density is lower than that of the NCM (nickel-cobalt-manganese) used by Tesla, its lifespan is longer, it’s safer, more stable, and, above all, cheaper to produce. And that last concept is precisely what stands out: cheap.

As for Tesla, the 4680 battery (made up of large cylindrical cells that improve energy density and offer more range), according to the study, generates twice as much heat as BYD’s, requiring more advanced and expensive cooling systems. This not only increases the price but can compromise the long-term health of the battery pack.

Although autonomy differences were not directly evaluated (since that also depends on motors, aerodynamics, and other vehicle factors), it was concluded that BYD’s LFP batteries are more suitable for urban or mid-range cars, while Tesla’s NCMs are aimed at high-performance vehicles.

Comparisons are never pleasant, but in this battle, BYD has taken the crown, efficiency proves more useful than costly innovations.

I told ya, the Chinese are coming....

Mercedes and BMW both have R&D centres there now.

Seems absolutely nuts to me to double down on protection tariffs and remove EV incentives, you're just handing it all to them

You also said, probably several times, that battery tech will probably evolve and innovative rather than complete revolution.

At least, I think that's what you said ...

Yeah it will / is.

Tesla circular cells aren't a uniquely Tesla thing either, Mercedes and BMW do it too although I'm not sure if either are in production. F1 has done it for ages.

Love the name of the new BYD car they've launched to compete with the (Chinese) Tesla 3.

'Qin L'

As in 'Qin l! That's a good price!'.

I'm thinking that adding some BYD shares to one's portfolio might not be such a bad move. Mind you, it would have been an even better move a couple of months ago...

Three different people at work have sent me a link to this 30,000rpm BYD motor :obscene-birdiedoublered:

I've got a lot of experience in making electric motor parts spin really fast (by using CF in various ways) and I'm "the really fast rotor guy" at my current place. Before that I did loads of F1 motors and the like.

I'd just say, this 30k BYD isn't a particularly impressive speed. For a start you need to say how big the part is, that really really matters  But from looking at the limited vids available it doesn't look especially large and I'd say making a motor that size spin at 30k is 20 year old tech at least.

BYD are just the first to go really public with the idea. Our stuff is the same idea, it's just more secret.

Although I didn't include that section, it also covered high-speed charging too.

And I wondered quite how coincidental the announcement timing was ...

Twisting the knife? Surely not! :D

On leccy cars, is there a battery health/life indicator like phones have?

Also, for charging at home,, do you actually need a home charger if you can use a 3 pin option?

IIRC a normal three pin plugs charges something like 3-4miles per hour.

Fine for a plugin hybrid with a 20-30 mile full electric range to charge over night, but lacking for a full leccy car.
