Oh, my mum gave me honesty. Don't think she ever told a lie in her life.

About 20 years ago I was living in MK and used to go see her every few weeks up in Bradford.
She liked just to go for a drive in The Yorkshire Dales or a visit to her favourite garden centre in Wilsden.

After one such visit, we were sat in her front room and she said summat like "hey, I don't think we paid for that garden chair "
We checked and they'd charged for most stuff, but not the chair. Ooh, result :D

She told me to ring them and pay properly. She was quite adamant.

The manager answered and he was taken aback but pleased to take my payment :)

And it's still ingrained into me. A few weeks ago I was watching footy at one of my locals. It was shit and my team lost so I got up and left.
Next day I realised I hadn't paid the tab. So I went down to pay and the owner looked amazed as he hadn't even realised. Every time I go in now he gives me a knowing look.

I still have the chair as it means a lot to me

Conversely, I have a recollection of my mum shoplifting in the 70's.*

Dodgy cow, is ol' ma Gremmers.

*A quiet Saturday morning in Greenwich. Imagine a young Gremmer's surprise when his mum takes him shopping to M&S in Lewisham in his smart, yet too small, school trousers. On a Saturday! An innocent Gremmers is taken into the changing room where old trousers were placed on the hanger of an identical, yet brand new pair and left on the rail when leaving. As he walks out of the shop a young Gremmers is trying to be very vocal about the terrible mistake his seemingly innocent mother has made and gets a clip round the ear and told to be quiet.

And that's when the seed of evil corruption set in...

I got my work ethic from my parents, as did my siblings.

Also the fear of debt, and my dad would always say "wait until you have the money to buy something", something that has applied to us all.

Likewise respect for others, and their point of view.

And I'm glad to see all these have filtered down to their great-grandchildren. They would be proud that this is their legacy..
