Best Car Overall = 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer GS3 which I still have

Best fun was the Lexus IS200. 2 litre straight six that liked to rev and was like silk.
Best for comfort was a run-out model of the Granada, officialy called a Scorpio but not that weird shape that came after it. All the goodies and a superb long distance cruiser with the 2.9 V6.

The best car is probably my current BMW i5. It's not my favourite though, which won't surprise folk is my Land Rover 110 3.5 v8



soft spot for the Fiat 500 too.

I didn't pass my driving test until I was 33, so I missed out on the xr3i type stuff

A 1984 2.5 Porsche 944 in gold that I paid 2k for and had for a couple of years. Great to drive, probably the most rewarding car all round that I’ve had to drive. Easy to fix and cheap to run. Sold to get more power stupidly.

Mk 2 Golf GTI 8V, 1987, F705RYK. I set a personal record in 1992/3, Blandford Forum to Nailsworth in Gloucestershire (where I lived and still do) 59 minutes around midnight on a full moon summers night, before bypasses and speed cameras. Takes me 1.5 hours these days in a more powerful car. It handled brilliantly and I'm sure was real world faster than the 16V.

Mk2 Mazda MX5 1.8, loved driving it until the sills and wheel arches rusted away, swapped it for a Mk3 2.0 sport MX5 which was faster and more modern but not quite as good to drive.

I loved it’s basic simplicity, ease of maintenance and ruggedness.Handled pretty well for an offroader with not a lot of body roll probably down to the torsion bar front suspension.

I had one of these as a company van for three years, around 25 years ago. Did 160,000 miles in it. It was noisy and basic (but I was young and didn't mind), did 28 MPG on average (but I wasn't paying for the fuel and didn't care) and not a thing went wrong with it right until the end, when the starter motor failed. Other than that it was absolutely reliable and would go anywhere. Changed it for a Nissan Terrano 3 litre SWB commercial, which was better in every way.

Oooh, forgot to mention the mighty Duster.
Had it just over 7 years from new and still runs like new. Never had any problems.
It's amazing off road and runs on dirt roads as happy as tarmac. Great 4WD system with diff locks and proper suspension. And super low first gear for tricky steep stuff
Perfect for island life where no long journeys but lots of dirt paths to play and explore.
Can't think of a car I'd rather have here. If we'd bought an expensive 4WD we wouldn't have dared do some of the stuff we do as too scared to scratch it.

We thought it would only last 5 or 6 years but it's still fantastic. Good for many years yet.
With huge boot which is good as we do lots of airport pickups

And always does 50+ MPG

And all for £15k new.

Every time I go out on the dirt bike, I look for new places to take the

Oooh, forgot to mention the mighty Duster.

Forgot to mention the paintwork. Not a spot of rust anywhere on the car.
But the biggest killer here is the relentless berserk sunshine.
Thankfully we paid extra for the metallic paint and still looks as good as day we bought it.
Just washed it for this special occasion

Most fun car.... Citroen Dyane. Used, abused. Engine transplant of the Citroen GS1220 which went straight onto the gearbox once the flywheel was modified. Left a trail of carnage across northern France the summer of 87, four up with camping kit to Le Mans.

My current car. A Skoda Superb Estate. Lots of room for a normal size bloke (I'm 6ft5) and limousine space in the rear seats and huge boot. Comfortable, has good economy and drives nicely. Be nice to have a bit more power, but hey, it does what it is supposed to do.

Most fun car I had was a Toyota Corolla Sprinter, 1.8l twin choke twin carb that regularly saw "off the clock" speeds past 180kph and was rear wheel drive fun on the dirt roads of Africa.

2016 Dacia Duster

Easy 50MPG, cruise control, aircon, decent enough stereo, tow hitch. It's a bit beat up, so I don't worry about where I park it!

In truth, I would like to have something with a nicer interior. But as there's bugger available under €20k, I guess I'll keep the duster a while longer!

I still have fond memories of my BMW E21 316.



Carbed 1.8l inline 4 that felt as smooth as an injected 6, handled beautifully, and cost me 600 quid. I only sold it because the sills went after a couple of years: my Dad persuaded me that the 600 quid to repair them wasn't worth it, and lent me the money to buy a Beetle which was an utter pile of utter shite. That's when I stopped taking my Dad's advice 100%....

If I had the chance to own one of these now, I'd probably get one, but they're not cheap any more.

I think most amusing has to be the Elise. Toyota engine in the back it was as cheap to service as a normal Toyota, and that was at the Lotus dealer. Insurance was cheap, tyres were cheap, fuel consumption was good.

An horourable mention has to go to the last car wifey owned before we left the UK, the mighty Up! GTi.
