Re: Do you carry obvious/ visable ID while out on the bike?
If I'm away for a long run or weekend I'll carry my wallet with driving licence etc in it.
Otherwise just my phone which is locked. I've never really thought about the identity bit.
Maybe I should but problem is the wallet is stuffed with cards etc and is bulky.

Not that long ago I had a friend who had a stroke whilst out cycling - he couldn't balance anymore and fell in a heap, managed to flag someone down but got dropped off only slightly closer to home as he could only point the directions rather than say anything coherent, he then drove himself to the hospital & luckily there was a policeman at a&e who was able to identify him by the car he drove there. So even if you are walking about having ID can be useful...
I pretty much always have phone & ice info on me, even if I've left my wallet at home, but we are talking about pretty remote circumstances & docs are going to concentrate on patching you up before identifying you.

Another tip - if you have ice info on your phone, make it clear who people might be phoning - if needs be make a separate duplicate contact, eg Norma Batty - wife, Stellios Batty - son

Does anyone still carry around their Proof of insurance document ? (you know, the stuff you need to show the cops in the event of being pulled over).
Wouldn't be too hard to have a small folder on the bike with all this stuff in it. (or, in small-paper form, tucked into jacket pocket?)

TBF I think the Five-O can work out if you're insured quicker than you could get your paperwork out.

You're right - medical services won't plug a random USB stick into any PCs linked to a hospital network. This was confirmed (again) by the medic on the DocBike BikerDown course I was presenting on, on Saturday.Yorick wrote: Tue Feb 04, 2025 9:36 pm All this tech stuff is shite.
A few years ago Pen came home with the idea of buying this USB stick which carried your personal details.
If you had an accident, folk just needed to put the USB in their laptop.
When's the last time you saw anybody out in the wild carrying a laptop?
Simple round the neck info thing works.
Or someone having to try to find shit on your phone? Bollox.
This works. Justcarry info round your neck
No need to fuck things up
Get a CrashCard and stick it in the lining of the helmet. It'll fall out when they pull out the foam liner to see if there's evidence inside the helmet of a head injury.

As an aside, it's not just concerns over cyber attacks. The Spin Doctor wrote: Mon Feb 10, 2025 6:37 pm

IIRC someone posted a USB stick to the US 'Lockpicking Lawyer'.
No memory chips - instead a bunch of charged capacitors that would have fried his computer.

You shouldn't be plugging random USB sticks into anything, in any context.
I think a lot of people are forgetting that most paramedics aren't 60+ retired men, but people in the range 20-40 for whom a phone would be their first port of call. Paper? What's that?
Oh and insurance? As KFB says, the 5-0 will know if you're insured and MoTd before they even get out of the car

Re: Do you carry obvious/ visable ID while out on the bike?
IIRC most of the paramedics I've met (both through working with them, and, ... err... professionally), were not exactly of the tik-tok generation and were well into their 2nd or 3rd career choice. Some were younger and fresher, but not, by any means, all.Mr. Dazzle wrote: Tue Feb 11, 2025 10:08 am You shouldn't be plugging random USB sticks into anything, in any context.

I'm lucky enough to have never met one 'in context', but I do know 2 IRL and they're my age. Same with coppers, who are in fact, not all bastards.
Actually I just remembered, I met paramedics 3 weeks on the trot at parkun (don't do MK parkrun, it's cursed
) and they were all younguns using google maps on their phones to find the patient

Re: Do you carry obvious/ visable ID while out on the bike?
I've met loads, of all ages, and 'qualifications' from trainees through to a couple of air ambulance doctors.
Mainly, I get to deal with medical rather than trauma. CFRs don't get sent (deliberately) to RTCs.
Even the chap I encountered who'd suffered an open lower leg fracture wasn't leaking enough to need blood.
Ages? Well, I first met one local guy about 30 years ago when he was editor of MAG News! He was hitchhiking and I stopped to pick him up.

Don't disagree. However, especially in winter, there's always a chance the phone won't work - in winter up here the temperature kills batteries so quickly and in summer if I fall off a bike there's the chance the phone will not be usable!Mr. Dazzle wrote: Tue Feb 11, 2025 10:08 am You shouldn't be plugging random USB sticks into anything, in any context.

Ok yes, everything I carry on paper can be found in my phone, BUT there's no harm having some basic info on paper in an easy pocket as back up
