I looked into it last time in Japan and it was quite expensive - Tam usually rents a mifi and we share that

I think an eSIM is better than a local SIM, you’re more confident you’ll have internet without having to search for one when you arrive.
Last year, I visited Thailand 2 times and used this Thailand eSIM. It worked great and is pretty affordable (the cheapest plan starts at $9).

Bloody hell. Thread resurrection!
I've been and come back and been back to SE Asia in the meantime.
FWIW, I paid EE £25 a week to replicate by UK data package in Thailand (and Vietnam this year) and it worked fine. Just as well, as both my Thai and Vietnamese are non-existent and Google Translate is essential.
