Recommend me a "glue"

Post by Jody »

I've had a genius idea!

I want to attach a small bag/ pouch to the topside of my snowboard between the bindings. In it, I'll be able to store alternative goggle lenses, a drink, go pro etc. All the weight will be at floor level and in the middle so should be pretty much unnoticeable?!

The plan is to glue the bag on at it's corners, so it can still flex with the board.
Therefore I need a strong, flexible glue that can cope with low temperatures.

What does the RTTL hive recommend !?

How are the bindings held on?

I'd probably look at using a similar method tbh.

If it's screws - then the screws could easily be threaded through the board -> bag material -> stiffener (eg a disc /triangle of hard plastic, or metal) in each corner to spread the load -> lock washer -> nut.

I'd be concerned about glues getting brittle in low temps: obviously there ARE glues that will take it, but you'd need to do some research.

Also - screwing the bag down allows you to take it off... ;) :D

I like the idea - how big are you thinking of making the bag? bumbag size would probably work best - it wouldn't get in the way at all.
Having said that... will the bag get in the way while you're "not" downhilling - eg in the lift queue or similar.

caveat: I'm not a boarder...

Are any really small tank bags available, where the base stays fixed to the bike but the bag zips / clips in place?

I'm not a skier or boarder either. But it sounds a great idea to me.

I'd be tempted to get something sorted, then contact a board manufacturer. Perhaps suggest an idea - free boards swap.

@Rockburner ... Do you know anyone who might advise :) ?

Re lift queue: how do people carry boards? Could the bag be used to hold a carry strap?

I'd use velcro. 3m it to the board and sew it to the bag.

Another non boarder, won't it introduce additional drag to the board, how is it better than a regular leg or bum bag?

I can answer that... It won't hurt when you fall on it. :D

When I was skiing there was a lot of discussion about how dangerous it can be to fall over when you're wearing a bum-bag or backpack. A bumbag with something very solid in it can do damage to your back very easily, and (like biking) a back-pack can promote "rolling" if you fall downhill, causing more limb damage.

As said - you'd need to find the 3M glue that is optimal for lower-temps (yes, there are different variants, I've worked with 3M in the past).

That said - the velcro idea would be ideal for manufacturing when you get that far.

Thinking about it... why hasn't this been done before?? It seems a very obvious idea.....

The bindings are screwed on using threaded inserts which are moulded into the board at the point of manufacture, said inserts go right through the thickness of the board.

Stuff between the bindings won't get in the way, it'll be fine. The only time you'd notice is when you're skating with only one foot in the bindings, you'd have to be careful not to kick your stuff :D

Honestly, I'd never glue this in a 'professional' context, glue is shit 99% of the time and thermoplastics (which is what the top of the board is made from) are notoriously hard to bond onto. Getting the prep and the method right is far more critical than the choice of glue probably.

Don't use epoxy, it's got no "give" and will crack off.

But, plenty of people glue stomp pads on, myself included. The only thing which would worry me is the water bottle, everything else is really light.

TBH I'd probably start with velcro tape, like dern said.

Lots of stuff is 'obvious', just after someone else does it first.

I'd tie a lanyard from bag to binding in case it falls off without you noticing.

just thinking - could you do four little bungies to the bindings instead? Sort of elasticated cargo net style.

As said - I'm no boarder, but you'd need the bindings to have hook points at all 4 corners of the "space" the bag sits in. (I don't know if the bindings would have those hook points)

Most snowboard bindings, and certainly the ones I've had, have sort of skeletal frames you could hook stuff onto. Indeed, I've always had a short leash which goes from my binding and clips on to my boot, so even when I'm not strapped in the board is still loosely tied to me. Stops the board from escaping if you carelessly let go of it :D They're compulsory in some resorts.

I am an ex-snowboarder - and it is a no from me. How are you going to ride lifts / drag lifts and pomos? Is a rucksack too difficult? If not just wear a bum bag

Surely it's not dissimilar to skis in that you could put some sort of fixing on after manufacture? Pretty sure skis come without any inserts, the bindings are fixed on after you buy the skis.

If the bag is little enough to leave you space for the spare foot when you're pushing to the lifts etc then it's a fab idea

Can you work out a fixing plate along the lines of something like a Givi tank bag thing? A 3D printing type thingy?

If you can, then I can fix a connecting version into a bag for you (sewing stuff, not zip ties! But zip ties might work for the first effort!)

As someone else said, a connecting lead from the bag to the board/bindings would be a good call - like for gopro thingies on track bikes :D :D

I really like the idea though - if you can sort the fixing plate/set up, I can help you create the exact bag you want/need. Once I have a car I'll be able to come over for coffee/beer :D

I think it depends whats in either of those. I ski with a Camelbak rucksak so I have water but not in a bottle. But I'm pretty careful what I put in for a day skiing - touring not so much as my touring is very simple and basic, so not so much chance of a fall. But skiing with mates here (and attempting to keep up, or at least not being tooooo slow!) I don't want much in the bag at all! Generally the spare lens and water! LOL

I use a camelback when enduro riding. Probably 100 tumbles in 7 years. No problems.
