oil based under coat - water based top coat?

Post by Mr Moofo »

I am painting a manshed door - but the instructions on the door, which was bare wood, siad avoid using water based paint. So I used an oil based undercoat (which took 3 days to dry!).
Can I now use a water based top coat (because they are all i can find) or do I have to use oil based (and where can you buy it?) ?
Thanks
Felix

Not sure as your oil is an undercoat but this mess is Water based gloss on top of oil based gloss after 12 month. For as long as i can keep buying oil based the water stuff can do one.

It seriously peels off like old sun tanned skin. Therapeutic but looks like shit

You can but the undercoat needs a right good keying, and I'm unsure about the longevity, especially outside.
I have to say I mainly use waterbased paint on wood now, mainly because I can't be arsed to wait forever for it to dry (especially door / windows where it'll inevitably stick to the frame), and also because it's increasingly hard to source over here.

So how long would white water based gloss last before going yellow if i was to take mine back down to the wood and start again? Got cats and dogs and could do with drying time being quicker.
