Bike Tour Travel Insurance / Medical Cover

Post by Alan PBTD »

Hi All

Putting together a bit of a bucket list / road trip for next year in the USA on Harley's with Eagle Rider. Doing Salt Lake City / Denvor and everywhere in between with an idea of Pikes Peak Hill Climb to round it off. Need a bit of advice on a cuple of things. Had anyone done Pikes Peak ? Is the high altitude potentially risky or not to be too concerned about?

And at the same time need to have some decent medial cover - need to cover a few existing medical conditions / Diabeties / Blood pressure and Warfin for me and the missus and to cover riding the Harley as well. And I suppose enought $'s to cover if the worst happens.

People who do trackdays with us did something simular a few years ago but as they were serving South Wales Police they have cover from work

Any help would be appreciated

ta

We use a company called Yellow Jersey, but honestly don't know if they cover motorbike stuff too.

I've ridden at over 10,000 feet, the bike will be fine if it's modern, you will feel a bit short of breath, but nothing to worry about.

I have done Pikes Peak in a car, some years ago now when the top 1/3 was still a dirt road. Not really scarey, good road but exposed, with massive drops and no guard rail. Main problem is cold, it was 80 degrees at the bottom and near freezing at the top.

The other problem is idiot drivers in autos, riding the brakes all the way down and boiling he fluid. They stop everyone and check wheels/brakes with a pyrometer and insist you wait for 15 mins. It is a pure coincidence that you have to stop right beside the gift shop.

Watch out for insurance, one of the big 'we cover all medical stuff'' companies has an exclusion on motorcycles burried in the small print. Ask specifically if they cover large motorcycles.

Yep - most specifically exclude big bikes (even your own), so you need to check.

Being a rate tart I shopped around to find the cheapest, and I almost got caught out. No mention of bikes in the short headline list of exclusions, it was burried on I think Page 48 of the 53 page Ts & Cs. They may have changed it now, I made a big fuss and threatened to report them to the Insurance watchdog. Can't actually remember which one it was.

Yellow Jersey do cover motorcycle stuff - I have their worldwide cover. Many other travel insurance will only cover up to 125 cc. As I didn't strictly trust the info on the website - I rang them and they told me that I was covered

Also look at Carole Nash as they do bike specific insurance, but more importantly it looks like they will help you find cover that takes into account pre existing conditions. Most travel insurance will exclude pre existing conditions.
