Wot yu playin? The gaming thread
Still only have an Xbox360 here so nothing new or fancy: mostly still enjoying Skyrim, but picked up a copy of Xcom:Enemy Unknown yesterday, I used to play the original Xcom games on PC when they were new so hopefully this might be fun.
Occasionally also playing Unciv on the Android tablet: it's essentially a port of Civ4 (iirc).
(We've got a thread for Films, one for books, here's one for Gaming ).

Nowt
I upgraded my PC 6 months ago, new flashy mobo, oodles of DDR5 RAM, a new all singing CPU, and a new to me 3070 founders edition GPU, and I've not so much as played a game of minesweeper on it, just not had the time or inclination.
It doesn't help that AAA games are now over 60 quid a pop.

I once completed 99% of Crash Bandicoot. My then 5 year old daughter wiped it from the memory card and all that hard work and mental anguish was gone in an instant. That was my gaming career over.
I gave considerable thought to putting her up for adoption. I did bring all this and more up during the father of the bride speech.

About a year ago I got to Malenia, Blade of Miquella on Elden Ring (about 100 hours of game play), she defeated me easily 30 odd times in a row, I only got to her second phase a couple of times!
I've not turned on the playstation since.

Re: Wot yu playin? The gaming thread
Just recently I've been playing:
Mudrunner Expeditions. A low energy game about driving across rough terrain and then pressing a button to perform various required actions.
The Outer Worlds. A space adventure in the fallout vein, made by the people who did Fallout New Vegas.
And I bought my first new game in something like 3 or 4 years. Space Marine 2

I'm working my way through Colossal Adventure, I'm currently stuck in a twisty maze of passageways that are all alike.

Tried a few things on the (android) phone a while ago. Some v nice graphics on some of the puzzle games but my favourite was the Monument Valley series.
Bought a PS3 years ago as it was a relatively cheap way of getting a Bluray player. That came with a game (Saboteur?) but never really got into it.
Last time I spent considerable hours on games was on text based adventure games then competed that space thing with the wire graphics. Had a go at Sims, Doom and completed Dune.

That's the one. Took me a while to learn to dock successfully.
Hmm...not sure it could be 'completed' now I think about it.

IIRC if you managed it a couple of times and made a bit of wonga you could buy an 'auto-dock'.

Yeah, I think if you sold your starter ship, a Cobra iirc, you could buy a cheaper one and then afford the auto dock from the get go.Count Steer wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 12:44 pmIIRC if you managed it a couple of times and made a bit of wonga you could buy an 'auto-dock'.

Nothing for a while -The Last of Us 2 was probably the last game I finished. Minecraft got me and my daughters through covid and out the other side relatively sane.

Re: Wot yu playin? The gaming thread
Chess against my phone mostly. I watched the Queen's Gambit on Netflix which ignited a smouldering passion.
I am much better than I used to be as a child and that's not only because it has an undo button. I've learned some opening strategies, got over losing pieces and become more aggressive - I don't really have a middle game, it's just open and then kill, kill, kill.
Played my son who told me he used to be really good. I didn't believe him. But, it turns out that he is actually really good and I'm yet to beat him.

Re: Wot yu playin? The gaming thread
I am still stuck on Unreal Tournament... been decades since I've looked at PC games. Did play Mario Kart with the kids on Nintendo platforms, but my son mainly uses Steam for his games.
