Ive had a pretty crap last couple of years. Lately, having found a job I enjoy and having finally got the help I needed from the community mental health team, a change in meds and things calming down domestically I have found relief in old pleasures. Music, either playing or listening, reading, lots of reading and getting things done. One of the things I realise I missed the most was motivation. I'm getting that back and its really helping, getting tasks completed etc. Even now, while taking a short break from studying, I have music playing, and Im relaxed and getting my groove on.

I view it as a journey. IF the things that have happened in the past hadnt, I wouldnt be here so as painfull as they were I have to accept what was to go forwards into the what maybe.

I still dont know what the future holds. I do think that my marraige is over as we dont really have anything in common but I needed to be in a better place to make those decisions. Im getting there, but know I need to take time because some of those decisions cant be undone.

So what I'm saying is, look after yourselves, do the things you like, try to capture those happier times in doing what you associate with them and dont be rash. And eat, drink and be merry. Peace out x

Circumstances dictate that I don't talk to him often, so I don't know timescale or otherwise.

With depression it's not the ups and downs of everyday life, it's your ability to cope with the ups and downs of everyday life. Some people can't, some people think they can but they can't - they're the ones that break hardest, some people need a 'crutch', be it drugs and/or therapy. Some just need to MTFU.

Problem is, you, none of you, know who is who. So until 'you' do, fuck off with the homespun help :)
I'm not sure who you're having a go at there, but are you saying no one can cope with life, even if they think they can, unless they're on drugs or getting therapy. And some people can but think they can't and they need to MTFU?
That's not what I'm saying at all, and you're intelligent enough know it. You're just having another little troll.

Focus on the fact that this is only a short term situation, and on what is good in life.

Sometimes life can be near perfect and you don't have a thing to worry about but from out of nowhere something pulls you into that pit of despair and no amount of telling yourself you've got nothing to worry about shifts it.
Do you think there are any solutions to that ^^^ and if so what are they?

I won’t get dragged in to talking about ‘shop’ again on forums, but I’d just like to underline two points that have been made- although I’ll badly paraphrase them:

1) don’t go cold Turkey on anti-depressants. Whilst some drugs will be fine, a lot can have significant withdrawal side effects with life-threatening consequences.

2) don’t try and fabricate a happiness or sadness scale for people/groups; wild assumptions are made about a persons perception of coping and what qualifies as ‘happy’ and ‘sad’. Stick to your own plot and let the concern of others be the concern of others.

Several but I'll leave that to professionals rather than passing opinions.
That's not just your GP you can self refer to local mental health services.
I asked what "do you think", so from a personal point of view what in your opinion do you think those several are?

I saw Steve Jobs on the TV years ago and he said something like the difference between successful people and non-successful people (and I use the term success just to mean that you're getting what you want out of life) is that the successful people have realised that they can shape their environment, not the other way around.

The reality inside your head is up to you, it's very hard to be positive all the time, but it's an incredibly liberating thing if you can accept that you are absolutely responsible for how you manage your life from this point on, because even if you're miserable, if you believe that you put yourself there then conversely you must believe that you can do something about it - whereas if you think someone else has put you there then you're powerless.
Steve Jobs is a perfect example of how we can't always be in control of our own fortunes.

Seriously, have a bit of empathy, some people will be reading this thread who have issues of their own. If you want a debate pick another thread
Above you say that you have several possible solutions which might help those who have issues of their own but then refuse to discuss them, so accusing me of lacking empathy is more than a bit rich coming from you.

It seems like the same person in this thread causing them as in the others really doesn't it.

Lucky I'm relaxing with a cider or I'd be getting the ban hammer out.

Maybe they'll see this as a friendly comment and wind their neck in

Do you have any links to professional recommendations?

FYI Mrs irie is an OHA who for obvious reasons is no longer able to deal face to face with cases, many of whom have such problems. She now has to deal with these case referrals several times a day using either telephone or video consultations.

It seems that in the final analysis there are no solutions other than trying to help people change their viewpoint on life.

Edit: able to
