It'll be interesting to see how the legislation that's been pending for a while actually addresses the situation. Right now, there are no controls on what can legally be sold. It's going to be impossible to police licences - there are thousands of illegal e-bikes and e-scoots zipping round London every day. The only possible control is via trading standards... and of course they were largely defunded by government cuts.

FTFY... Because I can guarantee you that many/most eBikes sold in the UK are still restricted to their max 25km/h assistance limit.

Re: Is This A Motorcycle?
There are a few "official" e scooter schemes that are legal if you're over a certain age, but all the ones you buy in Halfords are as legal as a CR500 on knobblies on the public highway.
An E-bike is no more than 250w power, limited to 25 km/h and need to be pedalled to make the motor kick in.
Anything more than that is a motorcycle.
Kids run about on them because 99.999% of the time, the cops can't be arsed to do anything.

If you don't need a licence, then there is no licence to lose ! Legal uk ebikes are in the bicycle group, no licence required. Derestricting your ebike turns it into a licence required vehicle and is pretty much a moped.
Last time I looked, e scooters owned privately are illegal on our streets and pavements aswel, some towns and cities do run e scoots for hire schemes, these are OK apparently.
However, because our country has turned into the wild west with little or no respect for laws and law enforcers, folk do what the fcuk they want.

It's pointless shouting at clouds though, bike or scooter they're here to stay. It would be good to get them to play nicely with other road users, and for the most part they do (thanks mboy).
There will always be numpties just like the kids razzing around on dirt bikes with no plates but the Police aren't in a position to do much until it's a big group ride like these bikelife groups.
I'm just impressed when I get overtaken by a scooter doing 40mph ! He probably won't need the police to sort him out an ambulance is more likely

Re: Is This A Motorcycle?
I nearly wiped out a guy riding an ebike this morning stepping out of the passenger door from a works van, wasn't till he rode off that I realised he was actually riding an electric motorbike
I think the Yamaha linked is a legal ebike - mentions pedal assist & max 25kmh speed

In related news, one of Ange Jolie's kids smashed into the back of a parked car on one yesterday, no helmet

Pfft, I managed to fall off one completely unaided, no parked cars required.
Was wearing a helmet, no head injuries. Broke the helmet though!
Did break AND dislocate my collar bone.

It was a lucky escape though...doesn't look like there was any damage to the fence.

Re: Is This A Motorcycle?
Bounced FAR better than I ever did as a kid even!
The fact he got up (whilst crying) and picked the bike up and walked off with it, means he was very lucky to get away with little more than a few bruises and a bruised ego!
I had much bigger crashes than that on a mountain bike as a kid, and spent minutes motionless on the floor as a result!
Still here to tell the tale...

Oh I dunno, I think it's pretty impressive a blind kid can ride a bike at all if I'm honest.

When I was about eight I could normally be found in about a four mile radius from my house as far as I remember kids cacked off pushbikes and hurt themselves back then also.

Re: Is This A Motorcycle?
Kin hell! Given the speed he came to a complete halt at, he was very luck if he didn't have internal injuries. Also lucky no traffic was coming down that road. Do we know if he did survive okay?
