My first car was a rusted-to-fuck Fiat Panda, but even thinking back now, driving it was brilliant because it represented....freedom! I don't think you can ever recapture that, but if you could bottle it, it'd sell millions.

Bottled panda juice? It's thousands per millilitre but pretty sure it's illegal outside of China.

Had a couple previously. Just nice to drive, nice to look at and they have pop-up headlights, which everybody knows is the coolest thing since wearing Grolsch caps on your trainers.

N/a or turbo?
Had a MK1 with a supercharger on it, and a MK2 which, as you say, are lovely.

However, not as cool as ....

Of the cars I've had when I was younger that I'd have without hesitation would be a 2CV6 (which I bought last year after 35 years of not owning one) and a 205GTi 1.9 and a Manta 1.8 Berlinetta Coupe. There's loads of others I'd entertain having again but those stand out mainly because of nostalgia and the amount of fun I had in them.

The iconic cars for my youth I wouldn't want now - the Escort, Astra, etc. Maybe I would like a Capri, but not for driving very often (I've never actually driven one TBF)!! LOL

My mother had a few awesome cars, most of which I'd love -

MGBGT - when we were both tiny!! Can't believe she managed two little kids and shopping in that! I would prefer a midget though but the 1969 ones didn't have spoked wheels

Triumph Stag - loved driving that with the roof down

Also had a couple of Triumph 2.5pi saloon thingies. They were lovely, but I prefer the other two!! LOL

I prefer much older cars than the 'iconic' ones from the 80's/90's!!

If I ever won the lottery I'd get in touch with the guy that restored my BDad's old Aston Martin and buy it!! LOL Dry sunny days mostly, but that would be AMAZING!!

Mine was a Datsun 120Y W100OUT. Bloody loved that car. It totally wasn't special in any way other than I could drive myself wherever I wanted to go!! I did have major dreams about 911's, Capri's and a couple of others, but the closest I got was a Manta, can't remember if it was a GTE; it was a hatchback and in a weird kind of orange/bronze!!!! It did go very very well though (For a girl racer type, it was wonderful )

Not just an "iconic" car, but my Mum owned a Guards Red Targa-top for several years. She actually fly out to Germany to pick it up from the factory and drove it home. Many memories of sitting in the (right-hand-side) passenger seat.

I doubt you'd find one for less than 50K now though.

I fell in love with the old Porche 911 after going in the back of a new one (the owner and my then boyfriend were too tall, I was too but there was no other space!! The owners girlfriend fitted there perfectly ) - would never do that again, but would love to drive one!

My old mate had one back in the day. It was a POS, but he'd had a huuuuge whale-tail spoiler put on it, but he still kept a big, metal toolbox in the boot as the back end was so wayward.

If fairness, it had a bit more street cred than his Renault 14 TL, which he insisted stood for 'Total Luxury'!. I think I pushed that fucking thing more than I sat in the passenger seat.

My old uni housemate had a Capri 1.6 Laser, we all used to pile into it for trips to Tesco / Bargain Booze.

The thing that I always remember about it was how tiny the engine was in the engine bay

I can't comment on the car thing,as I've never wanted a car in my life,I just need the use of one.
Concerning the strange desire to ride an old bike when there are new bikes with all the toys,it's an odd thing for sure,but it is a thing.

There's a level of enjoyment,involvement and pride of ownership which resonates deeply with owners of old shit. I think it's silly to compare the two in any area of performance,the joy comes in just riding them for what they are and being content. Practicalities are a dead-end,it's just a bit of fun.

I had an Astra GTE in 1991 as my first proper car, the one with the electronic dash, I think it's was a Mk3, it was a G-reg IIRC.
It was red with the black trim, genuinely fast even by todays standards and a proper fanny magnet.

I wouldn't have one now though because even though I had that and it was pretty cool for a young lad back in the day, I really hankered after either a white E30 BMW M3 like my mates, or the holy grail was a guards red 1989 Porsche Turbo, the last 930 model and I have the 1989 Porsche 930 now, so the GTE wouldn't really hit the spot anymore.

For me the list would probably be endless, I was obsessed with the Escort RS Cosworth when I was growing up which soon progressed into the Impreza and Evo’s, anything jap, 2jz and RB powered. When I was in a position where I could purchase the Escort (before they went mega crazy) I decided to go down the Jap route and had big powered stuff. I wanted bang for my buck and that’s why I never bought one.

With the price of things now I wish I had, 2 regrets, I had an opportunity of a Supra which i decided against, the price of them now and a mk2 escort fitted with a Sierra Cosworth engine, I reckon I’d have made my money on them if I had done the deal. Problem was the car I had at the time was an absolute weapon on the road I didn’t want to lose that for the road, so held on to it.

I'm not knocking them either, its just not for me. I've nearly pulled the trigger and (fortunately) even been outbid in the dying seconds of eBay listings for RD250/40s and 250/350LCs. I keep thinking I want one, but the reality is I wouldn't use it and it may destroy my fond memories. If I'm honest with myself, I really want a super smooth vibe free bike with good comfort, probably the Zero ADV thing but i'm not putting that much coin into a commuter. I'm still slightly misty eyed about something with spannies on though...

I love to see old cars and will stop and look at them, but I don't want to own one. As a young bloke I was fortunate to drive some nice exotica, but the reality was they were mostly heavy old pigs to drive, notably the Lambo Miura which still holds the title of the biggest POS car i've ever driven. Dont even get me started on my old Boss's 20/25 Rolls!

I had some great times tearing round in cars with one epic battle of me in a 2.0 Supermirafiori racing my mate in a MG Maestro back from Bognor Regis and another similar one with a XR3i vs a Golf GTi. Another great laugh was me in a 3.0 v6 Capri chasing my mate in a then new 2.8i Capri. The 80s were full of car fuelled memories for me, but I still don't want to own anything from back then. My current car has air cooled massaging seats in. I sometimes drive round the block just to have ago in them! Didnt get them in a Cortina!
