Aside from posers and athletes,I've never understood why 'ordinary' folk pay good money to do what you can do yourself. :hmmm:

They have more equipment and weights
They maintain the equipment and weights
They have the space for the equipment and weights
They provide incentive
They provide motivation
They have a social side
etc
etc
etc
I'd struggle to get multiple 5 meter + climbing walls in the house

Who needs equipment and weights?

What's wrong with Charlie Altas' dynamic tension?

I get your point, but that's like asking why people go to the pub when you can get a case of beer and drink it at home, or why go out for dinner when you've got food in the freezer.
I go for the reasons MrLB quotes. You work harder in a group, plus I have limited equipment at home*, plus the social side.

*'Assault bike (yeah...stupid name), half rack plus Olympic bar and weights, plus a rack of dumbells. Not used very often as I prefer to go and be social.

Our gym membership includes indoor & outdoor pools. Don't think many people are likely to have those at home.

There's also access to the various torture classes NoThankYouVeryMuch from static bikes through to ropes etc.

Actually, re walking as Noggin mentioned, after my neck op I used the weights machines to regain strength and the cross trainer and treadmill to build stamina. But walking IRL is harder than walking on the treadmill, even with the machine set to an incline.

Mr LB and Gremmers give good reasons. I joined my gym because it had specific equipment I wanted to use. I'm not a gym bunny and never really know what i'm doing and its easy to get workouts wrong. So I wanted something that specifically targets muscle groups in a set way and found EGYM to be perfect for this, as it's tailored to providing individual workouts and monitors and adjusts your weights and style of workout accordingly. I certainly can't do this type of workout outside of a gym.

We're with David Lloyd.

They're currently refurbishing the gym and, I think, will be moving to this approach (if you want it - weights bunnies etc can do their own thing).

They already have the assessment machine.

Bloke in work belongs to a gym with some fancy machines that uses a wrist strap and screens. No idea what brand/program it is. Without being harsh, he's fat and remains so.
Trying not to sound judgmental, which invariably means I am going to be, his diet is fucking dreadful, just from what I see him eat for breakfast and lunch, plus hearing his takeaway stories from the weekend, and this is where I think a lot of gyms fail, in that they offer all the machines and classes, but don't really push the nutrition angle. I'm not talking faddy diets or protein supplements, just the basics, even if it were just an app for recipes, basic advice sheets, etc.

Exercise bores me senseless, I'd far rather do some physical works that's gained me something at the end of it. I'm also convinced it keeps me flexible and gets me strength where I need it. I'm overweight too, but that's just because I eat and drink too much.

Yesterday was about 3 hours scrambling about on a rocky foreshore removing old trapped ropes and other detritus.

And to put that into context, I wear a fitness tracker thing when I'm at the gym. 45 mins of me blowing out of my arse (if I say so myself, I work quite hard) burns c. 600-700 calories.

Why is nice food so bloody calorific? :angry-cussingblack:

Yup, cross trainer, rowing, steep uphill on the treadmill, "Well done - you've earned a peanut!"

And just for context on my exercise, I was wearing a heart rate tracker earlier this year.

So what does it show?

The earlier peak is 15 minutes drive along icy, gravel-strewn, narrow lanes.

This was attending an ambulance call

The next, higher, peak is after an internal "Oh fark!" getting busy

The later peak is a relatively 'easy' session at the gym :)

Slacked off.......

lay in

lazy dog walk

eaten lunch

now watching Tour de France

I should really mow the lawn but it's just rained so that'll have to wait.

(according to Strava, yesterdays 21mile 2700ft of climbing Amish MTB ride burnt 1300 calories, it may also explain my slackness today).

A mate of mine (was a personal trainer in the uk) told me to just walk. Unless you are weightlifting to build specific muscles, he said that walking 5km, even gently but without stopping, is better than going between the aerobic machines (cycling, rowing, cross trainer etc!).
Although isn't weights etc good for improving bone density?
