I'm being a smart arse because curiosity lead to the wiki page and as with most subjects it's more interesting than it first seems. For a value of interesting that is, and possibly personality type too.

Lap belts are ok in planes as you're so close to the seat in front you can't accelerate enough to need a shoulder strap. In steerage anyway.
