To be fair, the US isn't set up for pedestrians in many places.

I made the mistake of walking from the place I was staying to the shopping mall (about a mile) in Henderson, just outside Las Vegas... I hadn't realised it would involve jogging down the live lane against oncoming traffic for thirty yards (alternative was climbing 20 ft down into a storm drain then up the other side) and then crossing a road rather like this on.

Next time I needed to go there, I broke out the motorcycle and riding kit. Great fun in 110 heat.
