Macbook pro, mouse icon dissapears

Post by Jody »

No idea what's up with my macbook but it's driving me nuts !!!

My mouse icon keeps disappearing, i first noticed it happening after I'd been watching utube full screen, but it's just done it as I was writing another post on here!

Closing the lid for a few seconds seems to restore it, but it shouldn't be happening in the first place!

I haven't changed any settings recently, so what can I check, what should I be looking at ?

When was the last time you gave it a proper restart?

Mine kept disappearing recently whenever I did a screensshot (which I need to do a lot). Think there was some bug with the screensharing software I also use. Seems to have been fixed with the latest OS update which is a major one, so I'd certainly try that first.

Generally though, if you give the mouse a generous waggle it can sometimes return - sounds silly, but there's a feature that makes the pointer go large when you shake the mouse so you can find it, and this seems to sometimes trigger a lost one re-appearing.

Restart from the Apple menu.

I've discovered that a lot of OSX/Apple users just open/close the lid and very rarely do a proper restart.

Quite right too. Apple have recommended just using sleep for many years now. Far quicker and less strain on components. A restart with a major OS update is all that's needed.

Does that apply to a desktop Mac too,ya reckon? I turn mine off every night.

Yep. There's no more harm in doing it than there ever was so I wouldn't sweat it, but there's no need to either. So if you're just shutting down because you feel it's good for it, then don't bother - they're designed to 'sleep' and that works best. Things like the Apple Watch are designed to work with this too, so they'll unlock a Mac for you when you wake it. Doesn't work if you restart as you always have to type your password the first time. It's all geared around sleeping rather than shutting down.

I have an email spam filter running on mine (and a lot of email accounts), so if I ever shut mine down for the night I wake up with loads of spam on my phone :)

Isn't there a function on a Mac which clears cookies etc when you do a restart? Or did I make that up?
