A lot of truth in this meme!Cousin Jack wrote: ↑Fri Apr 19, 2024 4:04 pm I report them frequently, reported 2 today. I expect a man in a transit pickup to turn up next week, put a bit of cold tarmac in the hole, smack it twice with the back of a shovel and report that it is fixed. The week after I will need to report it again

Not really, it's complete bollox. The Romans weren't around 4000 years ago, you have no idea where that tiny bit of pavement is or when it was built, Roman roads needed regular maintenance just like modern ones, horse and wagon traffic was as damaging to ancient roads as modern traffic is too modern roads, etc.

Ah but Council repairs are done in a day. How long did it take to build Rome?

Go to Ostia Antica (Rome's Pompei) and you can see wheel ruts worn into the cobbles.
Best part of 2,000 years and the road gang haven't sorted them. Even Essex County Council is quicker than that!

I really admire that man. 93! One of his (many) phrases that stick in my mind is “Don’t let the old man in”, referring to his attitude to life. I’m trying to learn from it!

It was apparently an unfortunate photo - here he is at the same event. Old, yes, but looking better than the first photo suggested.

Did I have six slices, or was it only five? In all the excitement I kind of forgot.

Re: utterly random picture thread.
That a great saying! My old man lived into his 90s when sadly he got diagnosed with delirium. That meant he had to give up shooting (crop protection) and plod took his guns away. That broke him as he was an outdoors type person and never wanted to gently into the good night! I always admired him for his attitude towards life. He said he could never understand his mates who retired and spent the rest of their lives going from "bed to chair and only watching tv as a past time"...

Re: utterly random picture thread.
When I was still working, Foal asked
"Dad, when you retire, are you going to be like my friends' retired dads?"
"What do they do, then?"
"Sit around all day watching WWII documentaries "
It's one of my rules: no daytime TV
