Celebrating life's oddballs.

42 Balloons: New musical follows man who flew over LA in a garden chair

https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-68811305

"In 1982, a truck driver made headlines when he tied 42 helium balloons to a garden chair and flew over part of Los Angeles."

Always loved the story of "Lawnchair Larry". Such a hare-brained scheme, that actually came to fruition plus he lives to tell the tale, completely unabashed as to the chaos caused.

Lost one of the covers for my air forks on the tredder ( a very posh tyre valve cap thingy)
Only noticed the following morning.....bugger!
Anyways, today out with the hound on the bike again (me on bike, dog running), get to the final approach to the gaffe which is a RaF track, thought I'd keep 'em peeled just in case, and bugger me, half way down the track I see a familiar shape lurking in the grass. Happy days!

It can be a problem if you read words and hear them pronounced, but not at the same time. E.g. I had heard of a place in the USA called Arkinsaw and another that I had read about that I thought was pronounced Are Kansas.

And why does antelope not rhyme with Penelope? :wtf:

It's important to mix cement in the right ratio when laying your patio.

These days, it's the benefits of OFSTED forcing schools to solely use phonics for reading.

'Pacific Ocean' is a good one, every C pronounced differently.

OFSTED have been discouraging whole word learning.

Phonics confuse the hell out of me...or rather, make me realise how fucked up English is

Baby D has a weekly spelling test which also includes phonics. She'll come home with the practice and make me question my own ability to read

So one week the "o" phonic is the sound in the word "phonic". The next week that same phonic is the sound in "so".

How are you supposed to know which is which. You just do as an English speaker I suppose.

She seems fine with it :D

In Turkish the letters of the alphabet are always pronounced the same - all 29 of them.

The letter C is always pronounced like an english 'J' so 'can' meaning life is pronounced jan.

In English, the letter i can be pronounced differently, as in hit and sir. In Turkish you would write them hit and sır.

There is no W or Q but there ıs a soft G - yumushak Ğ which follows a vowel and lengthens it so dağ (mountain) is pronounced daar.

It's all quite logical and is the easiest part of learning Turkish. But then you get onto verb endings and possessives and it starts getting difficult.

Council = belediye; Marmaris council = Marmaris Beledıyesi. My Turkish bank is İş Bankası, the 'si' and 'sı' on the ends beıng the possessıve.

Wait until she gets on to grammar. Then you'll really wonder!

By the end of KS2, children are expected to know all of the spelling, punctuation and grammar set out in the national curriculum, such as fronted adverbials, correct paragraph use and use of complex punctuation such as semicolons. Children are tested on their SPaG knowledge at the end of Year 6 in the national SATs.

There's a reason it's so logical though eh? Written Turkish pre the 1930s is a bit different. :D Good ol' Kemal A decided to 'westernise' the language (but iirc kicked out a lot of imported words) and it was done quickly and logically.

Makes it easy to get a quick grip on basic written Turkish - spoken is a bit more

While we're on the subject of English pronunciation... would anybody like to hear my favourite Limerick?

Yes, of course you would. :) Here goes:

There was a young lady from Slough
Who one day developed a cough
She wasn't to know
It would last until now
I hope that young lady pulls through.

There was once a Duchess of Bray,
You may be surprised when I say,
Despite her high station,
Rank and education,
Still spelt cunt with a K.

I like a smutty limerick.

Taking a car for an MOT retest, having bought two new front tyres and having it pass, so that it can be taxed for another year.

Wait, hang on. It's not my car, it's the Gremlinette's.

Mods: can you move this post to the 'Insignificant things that boil your piss' thread? :angry-cussingblack:

Maybe we need a 'Mugged off dads' thread.
