Hi all. Another bike forum refugee here. I was Gimlet on the Ducati UK forum and still am Knapper on the KTM forum though I haven't been on for a while because the new format drives me mad. Shame. Miss the silly bastards and the fucking about on there.

Bumped into Weeksy on both the above forums. I know he does a fine track day so I reckon his forum has got to be worth a look as well.
Riding a brace of KTMs at the moment - gen 1 1290 Superduke and an 1190 Adventure (best bike I've ever owned) - with a Ducati Streetfighter mothballed waiting attention.

Tell us more about the SF?

SF is a 2010 standard model 1098. Bought 2014 after the Speed Triple I had underwhelmed. Spent and arm and a leg Having the SF's engine blue-printed and tuned and uprating the suspension. It was an epic thing. Then it cracked the front piston. The rear shock rocker arm had been chafing the loom (probable combination of altering the ride height during the suspension work and the loom getting shifted and not put back in exactly the right place during some of the other work). A wire for the front injector sensor was damaged and the front pot ended up having neat petrol hosed into it which cracked the piston.
A standard new piston would come paired with a new barrel. The existing barrel was machined as part of the blue-printing to that would have to be machined to match the rear, which may mean engine out and rear barrel off for weighing and measuring....

On top of that the tank has stretched and as it's been at off the road for three years I expect the fuel pump is shot as well. It's really starting to add up so the bike has gone on the back burner. Can't really sell it because it owes me too much and few people would touch it with a non-standard engine.
It's nagging away at the back of my mind. It needs sorting but a change of circumstances has made finances difficult and now with this virus shite god knows what's going to happen. I miss it though. It was a brute of a thing. makes the same power as the 1290 Superduke with a 1:1 throttle and no electronics. It's a riot to ride.

Now there's a name I remember well, Knapper. Remember you speaking very highly of the 1190, glad you've still got it. I had the GT but got rid with too many niggs. I'm playing safe at the moment with a 900 tracer, good fun actually.

How do Dodgy. Yep still loving the 1190. Gone past 30,000 miles now and it's definitely got faster. Still a brilliant thing.

Can't say I've had any problems with the Superduke, and that's up to 20,000 miles now. Had issues with the clutch slave which was fixed, supposedly, under warranty but I think it's actually the master cylinder.
I was thinking of getting rid, really because of the progressive throttle which makes it feel strangled unless it's given really big fistfuls. Quite like the MT10 and came close a few times to trading it in but we have a new KTM dealer in Dorset, Moto Corsa and they have a dyno. Not a Dynojet, a proper one. The head mechanic had a gen 1 SDR himself and he has remapped them and got rid of that throttle ramp so I'm keen to keep it now, fit a DNA stage 3 airbox and get it custom mapped with a proper throttle connection. Should be an animal..

My mate has an 1190 Adv and absolutely loves it. Got a load of bits on it and rode it across the states as well as doing the Wales 500 rally on it last year. He's thinking of selling it to fund a 790 Adv for the Mrs which is a shame. I did sit on it but i could just about get my big toes down and it felt like it weighed 9000kg after my 690. Apparently the pre load was wound up but even so it was HUGE.

They are tall. The seat has two positions and the R is taller than the road version. The Powerparts seat adds about 10 mm as well.

Feels heavy next to a 690 but against most of the litre+ adventure class they feel pretty light on their feet.
I rode a 1250GS back to back with my 1190 last summer and the 1190 feel stiffer, lighter and faster.
The 1290 Adv has more bottom end but it feels heavier and the 1190's engine has to my mind more character. It's got a soaraway top end rush like the old 990s and in real life on the road it's as fast as the 1290. In fact the 1190 has shown a clean pair of heels to many a bike that should be faster on paper.

It's about the only bike I've ever had that always feels fresh and exhilarating every time I ride it. It never gets stale or starts to grate. Nothing about it bugs me and every time I get on it it feels like coming home.
I rode my longest day in the 1190, 700 miles from Inverness to Dorset in one go by the scenic route. Arse and legs were glad for the fuel stops but I never got tired of it.

Yup everything feels heavy after the 690 pretty much. My brothers Versys 650 felt like a tank.

My mate's done about 35k miles on his 1190 I think. Hoping I get a chance to ride it before he punts it on, if we are ever out of lockdown.

I wrote my car off three weeks ago in an off-road accident on steep ground (lucky to be alive..) Anyway, the 1190 is now my only transport - the Superduke is overdue its 18K big service so in the present crisis it's sorned and off the road and the 1190 is doing it all. I can get £70 worth of groceries into my roll bag and tail pack. Somehow I always manage to find a very long and winding route to the supermarket...

If I could I'd buy another low mileage 1190 and put it into deep storage for when this one reaches the end of the line, though I'm hoping that will be a long time coming. They've been know to go well past 100,000 miles.

Still going but they did a makeover, new platform, whatever, and ruined it. I was getting plagued with push notification pop-ups and it drove me mad so I haven't been on since. Still a member but a lot of people have gone. A real shame, it was a proper laugh on there. There's a few stalwarts have stuck around I think but not many.
Need to get them on here. It'll need a KTM playpen section though for the not easily offended.
