Re: What have you done today thread?
We've got a guy in painting our stairway, two different colours on the walls plus gloss white on the woodwork. We bought the paint (came to a hair off £100) and he does the filling, sanding, prep and painting. He's charging us £280 for approx 2.5 days work. It's work I absolutely don't want to do (very high, inaccessible ceiling), and if I did it would take me months. I think £280 is a bargain. His work is good quality as well.
There is no cloud, just somebody else's computer.

Re: What have you done today thread?
Everyone works from a BAFO mate, whether it's a pound or twenty million - in fact I worked on a job where the BAFO was 200m SAR less than the first quote.
I bet you've never paid screen price for a car or bike?
(edited, dunno about VAT, I didn't ask, but he preferred a bank transfer, so I assume he's above board, otherwise he'd be asking for cash)

Re: What have you done today thread?
They were all roughly the same, there wasn't a huge amount between the lowest and highest, tbh my missus dealt with most of it.
I usually use the 'discount' part of the final negotiation to make a point of saying that Im not going to haggle and I'll pay what they first quoted, but I want a top job doing and "I'll be fair with you if you're fair with me" stuff.
I generally find that if you're right with people then they're right back, especially tradesmen, being one myself.
Re: What have you done today thread?
I have done nothing. I did my last day at work yesterday and I am looking forward to a long retirement spent chatting to the check out girls at Tescos, going to the post office at dinnertime* and telling people how old I will be next year**
* Dinnertime is in the middle of the day, so between 12.00 and 14.00
** I'll be 67 next year you know

Wife is still working so nothing really planned. We're looking at doing a tour of the Canadian Rockies but that won't be till next year. In the meantime she's given me a list of jobs to do around the house...Potter wrote: ↑Fri Mar 22, 2024 11:27 amCongratulations on your retirementDruid wrote: ↑Fri Mar 22, 2024 11:18 am I have done nothing. Congratulations!
I'm sitting on toilet trying not to puke. That was a very very hard indoor cycle race.
Average HR for 40 mins, 170bpm, maximum 182

Re: What have you done today thread?
Daily trip to Screwfix.
Bought the guttering for the back of the cabin. They smirked as they slid the 3m lengths across the counter, having seen the car I arrived in.
Not so smirky when I got to the car, whipped out my measure and cut them to the required lengths with my battery Makita saw.
(Bought a pair of Scruff's work pants while I was there...got to look the part eh? ).

Re: What have you done today thread?
Rolling around on a motorbike, running as many errands as I could to make myself feel I was doing something useful.
The roads in South Cheshire - & especially North Shropshire - were dry & grippy today. And also largely deserted & free of mud etc.
A good day.

Re: What have you done today thread?
Spent a couple of hours freezing slowly to death in the deceptive sunshine, deciding where to fit my 'dash cams' on the KTM.
Finally decided, spent 10 mins attaching them, and will finish off attaching the wiring, and adjusting the viewing angles tomorrow. Did I mention it was bastard freezing?

Re: What have you done today thread?
No one wants to fit my worktops... they just want to do full kitchens (I've done my own). So fuck it, I'll fit them myself.MyLittleStudPony wrote: ↑Fri Mar 22, 2024 7:34 pm Re. quotes and trades, goons, toolies etc, if you have a house which looks nice, you pay the nice-house-owner rate.
This time next year I'll be up to my ears in Sea-doos.

The nice thing about jobs like that is, at the end, you can stand back and admire..........KungFooBob wrote: ↑Fri Mar 22, 2024 7:39 pmNo one wants to fit my worktops... they just want to do full kitchens (I've done my own). Re: What have you done today thread?
After trying to cut a straight line and failing at every attempt with my jigsaw, I bought a circular saw last week. It's so much easier cutting the facia panels!Count Steer wrote: ↑Fri Mar 22, 2024 7:43 pmThe nice thing about jobs like that is, at the end, you can stand back and admire..........KungFooBob wrote: ↑Fri Mar 22, 2024 7:39 pmNo one wants to fit my worktops... they just want to do full kitchens (I've done my own).
