It doesn't look a difficult job if you're happy with Spanners, I'm just scared of inside engine stuff. I'm pretty certain the annual/6k valve check is more a rocker arm check as much as anything else, until the 2016 on model when it got a different head design. Plenty of higher mileage 690s about though. Ages ago there was a 690 enduro that had done near 90k when the rocker arms finally went but they'd never been changed until then.
Oh and be careful with the filter cover bolts, guess who snapped one trying to use a torque wrench to the correct NM figure. Jim Aim mechanic said they do it with just over hand tight by feel as they snap easy

Cheers for the heads up on the filter bolts.
I've done the valve check on plenty of bikes including an 1190 so I'm not worried about it and it uses the same shims as the 1190 so I've got the shim kit already.
I've just found the receipt that says that the shims were checked and the rockers were swapped out less than 2k miles ago. Was 7 years though so will probably have a look anyway.

Nice, as you say someone's spent a lot of money on it. That's pretty much the spec of my mates. Not my cup of tea visually but as a tool for a job a lot of bike capable on and off road. My mate used his last on the Wales 500 and said it was great. He'd done it before on his 1190 Adv R but said the 690 was much better suited.

I took my 1190 off road once, on a gravel road and couldn't get off it quick enough. I rode it home and bought the drz. I also dropped the 1190 once and it went down so fast, hurt and was an absolute pig to pick up with the wheels up hill. Fortunately it was in town so someone gave me a hand. Nothing would convince me to get something that heavy to go off road.
Very nice. Do you have your luggage situation sorted out yet? I'm looking for a bike to do exactly the same kind of thing. Local trails, and then venture further afield, the UK TET and I want to go do the Swedish TET, camping. I see a lot of people like soft luggage for offroad as it's less likely to hurt you when you fall off, off-road. But soft luggage is easier to thieve...

Yes. I bought some enduristan blizzard side bags and a tornado pack sack last year and used them to get to Toulouse. Completely waterproof in heavy rain and hail on the autoroute.

They were a lot cheaper than the equivalent Kriega and Giant Loop stuff.
I'd take a lot less when camping on my own. The top box just had walking boots (which I wouldn't bother with) and my sleeping bag which was a 4 seasons. I could get a 3 seasons bag and enough clothes for a week in the pack sack. The side panniers were easily big enough for my small tent, a tarp, sleeping pad and cooking stuff.

He did make a meal of it. You just unclip the straps and lift them off. It’s not as convenient as hard luggage but less likely to get damage or damage you as you said.

You reckon you can get enough shit in there for 2 weeks of camping? Do you bother with a back pack? My back is knackered so if I did have one it would only have maybe waterproofs and stuff like that in it
I probably won’t be able to tell on this bike as I’m pretty sure the engine will be louder and produce more vibrations. The drz has more aggressive tyres but the engine still dominates the experience.
