Straw man argument. No one is failing to grasp the penalising action of an additional tax. Car drivers pay through the nose for that already with road "tax" and fuel duty etc. There is already a congestion charge and of course parking tax and speeding tax is rampant and unmoderated. Think of a number and double it. If you ask me, it's obvious the plan is to prevent low income citizens (i.e. the VAST majority) from being able to own and run their own personal transport.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Thu Aug 31, 2023 11:45 am I do wonder why so many people can't grasp the "tax as a motivator" model, be it ULEZ or anything else.
No. The problem with this additional tax on top of the dozens of current penalty charges is simply one of generating REVENUE. Sadiq Khan is a terrible mayor. He has presided over the complete collapse of the London transport system along with expensive and failing idiotic traffic calming measures and insane levels of anti driver legislation. He has basically bankrupted the system and needs to find more money using the pretence of dead children and falsified data to line his pockets.
He is a narcissistic, egoistic self-serving piece of shit.

You could all just sell your £1,000,000 houses and move somewhere nice?

LOL at "speeding tax". Speeding is illegal, has been for years and years, it's not a tax It's a punishment for breaking the law.
Can't speak to Kahn's motivation, but you Londoners voted 'im back in and ULEZ was part of his manifesto, sooooo....

You want to try riding a motorcycle at 20mph in London. It is not only ridiculously slow, it is fantastically dangerous. I appreciate that inconsiderate use of higher speed is dangerous but when I risk being rammed by a bicycle or cut up by some idiot on a battery powered death trap, something is very wrong with the simplistic "speed is the problem" argument.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Thu Aug 31, 2023 2:44 pm LOL at "speeding tax". Maybe you need more traffic calming measures

Nice soundbite, but the people this disproportionately impacts aren't those who live in big, owned houses, but people on low incomes. I'm fine, both cars and bike all compliant, so I can be all smug, but my gardener's only employee has jacked it in as he can't afford a new car nor the ULEZ

No one said it was ideal for everyone. But people love to moan about how it's all shit, but they all choose to live there when a chunk of them could easily sell up and move to the country.gremlin wrote: ↑Thu Aug 31, 2023 3:24 pmNice soundbite, but the people this disproportionately impacts aren't those who live in big, owned houses, but people on low incomes. One of the most telling/amusing things to me is looking at the Mayoral election results and the ULEZ zones side by side.
Pretty much every borough which voted for Kahn (red) already had ULEZ. Londoners just wanting everyone else to share in their misery?
BTW how does the scrappage scheme work? Looks to me like you can get £2000 for scrapping an old non compliant car? I've just looked on Autotrader and there are >900 cars on there within 40 miles of me (MK) which are less than £2000 and ULEZ compliant. So what's all this "can't get a car?" is there more to it?

The ONLY time speed is a problem is when the speed is inappropriate for the conditions.Screwdriver wrote: ↑Thu Aug 31, 2023 3:05 pmYou want to try riding a motorcycle at 20mph in London. Yes, and very few (probably no) people are infallible at judging when things are inappropriate. That's why we have laws in general, not just for speeding.

They could, but when job, family, kids in school plus moving costs and getting social housing elsewhere are factored in, not so viable.weeksy wrote: ↑Thu Aug 31, 2023 3:29 pmNo one said it was ideal for everyone. Re: Any London members taking up Khan's scrappage offer?
So, the obvious plan to raise revenue kinda falls over if you have a compliant vehicle and don't need to pay the ULEZ charge, like 90% of vehicles in the zone already.Screwdriver wrote: ↑Thu Aug 31, 2023 2:40 pm If you ask me, it's obvious the plan is to prevent low income citizens (i.e. the VAST majority) from being able to own and run their own personal transport.
No. The problem with this additional tax on top of the dozens of current penalty charges is simply one of generating REVENUE.

And generating tax revenue is a bit moot if TfL are subsidising people to scrap their old dirty cars.
Of course, it couldn't be anything to do with delivering cleaner air in one of the world's most polluted cities, or developing a plan first installed by the previous mayor (whose name escapes me) or staying in line with government policies that are creating ULEZ's in other cities? Perish the thought that it's a successful Labour mayor doing it, and not somebody motivated by sour grapes.

I'm a big fan of inappropriate speed altho some unpleasant discoveries with the ZX11 brakes gave me pause for thought...Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Thu Aug 31, 2023 3:48 pmYes, and very few (probably no) people are infallible at judging when things are inappropriate.
