Accommodation - Bristol
Foal is looking for accommodation in Bristol.
He has a Uni place for a one year Masters, starting in 3 weeks. Handed in his notice, leaves in 2 weeks.
Today the Uni have said 'no accomodation' (it was one of the 'selling points' that they had specific accommodation for Masters students ...
Any suggestions of local Facebook groups etc where accommodation might be advertised, gratefully received.

Greenman might have a spare room, does Foal like a smoke and a roast dinner?

Good luck Hoss. Brizzl Uni was in the news recently over their shortage of accommodation. They're billeting some over the border in that Wales. Could be fun getting home after a late bash in the Student Union!

Foal looked into that. TBH I can't remember what the details were, but something like they've had it for years and, coincidentally, they have teaching facilities in Swansea or summat.Count Steer wrote: ↑Sat Aug 26, 2023 7:49 am Good luck Hoss. Re: Accommodation - Bristol
My youngest got a shared place with a bunch of random ex stoodents in brizzle through the normal route (spareroom.com and word of mouth). "Filling up the last room in a shared house" gives you a fair amount of options and smaller groups who have speculatively found an 8 bedroom place will be getting desperate by now to secure the house and firm up the contract.
I do recall it was fooking expensive though. These HMO landlords are making a killing.

It's not got any cheaper ...
At the moment he's still working and with us. Word of mouth is more difficult.
One of the local Fb groups that has accommodation info has stopped taking new student members.

Re: Accommodation - Bristol
Drop me a pm with some info and I'll share on FB - I still have quite a few Bristol/Bristol area friends that might have or know of a spare room.
No idea if it will work but maybe. Also got a friend who's just moved back from Spain and is in Nailsea whilst looking to find somewhere in Bristol proper, so he might be up for taking a lodger when he does find somewhere as would make it easier to get somewhere if someone is sharing some of the costs, maybe!
Not sure it'll help or work, but happy to give it a try if you would like?

Re: Accommodation - Bristol
There is such a demand for rental here in Bristol the prices are sky high if you can even find a place/room. A guy just moved in to a house that borders my garden and he is paying £1200 a month for a 2 bed end terrace. I pay about 35% of that on my mortgage for a 3 bed detached!
Maybe you could look at accommodation on the outskirts of Bristol somewhere like Yate, Keynsham or Kingswood. Whats your budget?
The rougher area's like Easton and St Pauls are heavy student places now so don't be put off by the reputation of the areas.
I take it you've tried Whiteladies rd and Cotham? Most of those big Victorian houses are HMO's now for students.
I shall put some feeders out for you on FB...

Re: Accommodation - Bristol
SpareRoom is getting lots of attention - weirdest one is an ex-care home!
Budget is 500-600 pm
Move away from the uni & city centre means travel costs.

Re: Accommodation - Bristol
Yate and Keynsham both have good travel links to Bristol via train and bus which are quite cheap.
Should be able to find rooms for under £600 in a house share.

We're paying more than that for our daughter's Uni accommodation in Southampton.

He'll go slightly higher than 600 if necessary, but is looking to get bar work.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Mon Aug 28, 2023 6:02 pm We're paying more than that for our daughter's Uni accommodation in Southampton.
Unfortunately, there's no 'maintenance' element to the loan, only fees. We're giving him part of it, the rest is from his savings. Similarly, we'll be subbing living costs too.

Re: Accommodation - Bristol
My youngest was definitely paying a fair chunk more than that for a room in a shared house in central Bristol.
It's the stoodents fault, they're all bankrolled by wealthy parents from the shires.

Re: Accommodation - Bristol
Although not explicit, there is some anti-student selection, eg 'professional' only. He's already contacted one or two to explain that he's been working for over two years, so is a growned up.
