I may have just made a very rash and expensive offer

Post by Le_Fromage_Grande »

I've said that I'll take my family to Japan next year at the same time as the Suzuka 8 Hour, I'm budgeting on £10K for taking 4 adults to Tokyo for a week with me going to Suzuka for a couple of days.

So when it turns out to be waaay too expensive, you can go on your own.

Imagine the size of the shopping budget while you're in suzuka.

I won't be going on my own, my wife has always wanted to go to Japan, my daughter is fascinated by Japanese culture, and my son won't turn down the opportunity to go at my expense.

My instinct is it'd cost more than 10k. But enjoy it, what a fabulous experience for you and them.

I've got as far as looking at flight costs, £1500 each I found, but it was only a quick look, tbh I thought that was a bit cheap

Took my lot to NYC earlier this year, well they paid for their flights, but I did everything else. It was brilliant to spend time with them as adults. It was so good I'm taking them to Naples in October. Never stop making memories!

That is £6k on flights.
£300 a night for a basic hotel x 14 nights, even if you only take two rooms and the kids share a room (and £300 a night won't get you much) then that's 14x£600 a night - another £8k.
Then you'll easily blow a good few grand a week there, so you'll gobble up £20k and that's if you watch your spending.

Money is for spending though, get it done.
My old school friend (now a Greek national!), who isn't poor but not exactly loaded, did the airBnB thing for his Tokyo trip. Probably works out cheaper for 4 than hotels, but you have the food thing to add in. Eating out was fun (he said) and not astronomical if you avoid the glitzy restaurants and slurp in a few ramen places etc. The AirBnB thing was easy to arrange and worked out

Quite fancy a 2 centre trip - week in Tokyo + a week out and about.
Doubt is not a pleasant condition.
But certainty is an absurd one

I've had a look at the cost of Tokyo hotels, not sure what I expected but they are expensive, staying in Osaka or Nagoya would save a fortune, staying in Kyoto is more expensive than Tokyo, when I worked for Kawasaki all the Japanese people I worked with said Tokyo was horrible in summer - far too hot, so staying further north might make sense, but I'd like at least a couple of nights in Tokyo.

I think the best way to get around would be by train, driving doesn't look great.

If you want a bag carrier/trolley pusher I'll discount my usual rate.

It's somewhere I'd love to go too. One day, who knows, I might.

I was in Tokyo in the summer and it seemed fine. Both times I've visited I got around using the trains. Even that was quite hard as there were no signs in English and few people speak it. Plus I think they'd rather tell you the wrong directions than admit they don't know or something like that.

That was all about 20++ years ago though.

Think of the fun you could have in Vegas with 20k.

You could go watch some racing at Laguna.

I've been to both 25 years ago, if I go I want it to be something special.
Last time we went to California in 1999 we spent £3K on the trip for two of us, so I should get over spending £10K+ on going to Japan, but I'm a bit worried what we'd do in evenings as none of speak Japanese in any way, but we'll see what happens.

Or the Bahamas.
Or Thailand, sell the kids for organ harvesting and have it large.
Been to Lapland in summer, saw the midnight sun and I don't like snow.
I know someone who got kidnapped in Thailand (it was his second kidnapping, the first was in Colombia)
My sister went to the Bahamas and there was a hurricane, which made me laugh.
