Sort of convinced ourselves the day van/weekender with a drive away awning would suit us for now, I've started looking to get an idea of prices etc. Pretty shocked at how much such high mileage campers, particularly VW Ts sell for!

Re: Any good camper/motor home forums about?
VWs are massively overpriced for what they are - kinda like BMW GSs - it's the 'fond-memories'/'celeb' factor that pushes the prices up. Objectively they're no better than any other.

It's why we went for buying a transit and converting it.

Since Covid the prices of used vehicles has gone up by decent amount. There's always the DIY option which will make it a lot cheaper depending on what you need.

I can fly out there for less than £30 and presumably back again for the same if its not worth having, but could be a bargain and a bit of an adventure driving it home again! I'm about 60% tempted...

It's a 30 year old van with 170k on the clock and a worn out interior. Step away from the computer for the rest of the evening.

No MOT and no tax. Good luck on driving that back from Spain. Or even driving it in Spain. The Spanish Police all have the DVLA MOT and Tax checker on their smartphones.
No MOT or tax means vehicle seizure and a big on the spot fine, and British registered cars are easy to check within seconds. Easy target, easy money.
I've had both a T4 and a T5 for a number of years because I fell for the hype. Up until August I had a Vauxhall Vivaro which was better to drive than either of the VW's, felt more solidly built and because the Vivaro/Trafic/Primastar are all galvanised, few rust issues like the VW's, Transits and Vito's. Not a problem if you are running one in Southern Europe, but in the UK its useful.
My T4 is no longer on DVLA records, as presumably the rust became terminal, despite a weldathon every MOT.

I love the idea of a camper. A race van configuration would appear best so we could chuck the kids bikes tent etc in the garage and have the dog and kids in the front.
Seems you need to budget circa £20k

You want on of these....

But mine has a double rather than two singles and is right hand drive with less miles... I paid a good chunk less than that too!

I did.
I like the VW crowd and support on the forums. When I had my T25 some guys were trying to organise a "put the engine in and get it running day" for me!Whysub wrote: ↑Sun Oct 11, 2020 11:00 pm No MOT and no tax. I have been looking at Vivaro/Trafic/Primastars as an alternative but with slight reservations as my mate had a Renault and it was plagued by leccy problems such as dash going blank etc and breakdown man told him it was common to those models? They do seem a better bang for yer buck though and they use a drive away awning, VW stylee which appeals.

Re: Any good camper/motor home forums about?
I think that is whats in our future, but not now. That said at least you seem to be buying a nicely put together camper and lower miles too. Trouble with the other campers they often seemed to be built out of high mileage vans and no constructed very well in a lot of cases either!KungFooBob wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 8:01 pm You want on of these....

300k miles with a new engine fitted that's only done 160k!

VW tax innit.
Buy a VW and you're buying into a life style.
Plenty of stuff more practical and cheaper.
I would have bought a proper van conversion like a Timberland rather than a Coach built if I didn't need the garage.

Re: Any good camper/motor home forums about?
I've just bought a Crafter (LWB Maxi) that's going to get converted. Fingers crossed it should be in the country before the new year and a 20% Brexit tax. When buying new they're all eye wateringly expensive.
Re: Any good camper/motor home forums about?
I've got a MWB Crafter, almost finished converting it. It was significantly cheaper than a similar spec Sprinter, Crafters seem to be the only VWs not subject to the lifestyle tax

Isn't a Crafter a rebadged Sprinter anyway?Druid wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 11:09 pmI've got a MWB Crafter, almost finished converting it. It was significantly cheaper than a similar spec Sprinter, Crafters seem to be the only VWs not subject to the lifestyle tax

Re: Any good camper/motor home forums about?
I did think about buying a horsebox. Plenty about with decent living accommodation for four and the horsey part will easily carry two bikes and plenty of tools.
Downsides are parking one anywhere, plus ridiculously low mpg. And don't mention the smell of horse piss

Re: Any good camper/motor home forums about?
At this point in time, the smaller ones appeal as we can use it as a daily driver/people carrier. Sadly i look after some older members of the family who struggle getting in and out of our cars, so a smaller camper would come in handy for ferrying them about. I suspect this would become its primary function tbh.

Re: Any good camper/motor home forums about?
In that case an ex ambulance would be a good conversion starting point.
Re: Any good camper/motor home forums about?
Pretty much, apart from the engine and gearbox. 2017 and later are totally different vans thoughRockburner wrote: ↑Wed Oct 14, 2020 8:21 amIsn't a Crafter a rebadged Sprinter anyway?
