Anybody had a wisdom tooth out later in life?

Post by gremlin »

I had one of mine whipped out nearly two weeks ago. Face still feels like it's been punched bloody hard. Toothache like nobody's business (despite the tooth being obviously absent) and feeling shit like a lukewarm dog turd: sudden nausea, several near-fainting episodes out of nowhere and the chronic shits last week. Might have been the antibiotics (apparently it was infected as he cheerily informed me whilst digging around with an implement of torture) but finished those well over a week ago, along with the co-codamol.

Is this normal? Will I die? Anyone want first dobs on my flea-bag dog?

Antibiotics can screw up your digestion, especially if helped by alcohol. If your still feeling that bad then its back too the dentist as it sounds like you might still be infected.

Bit late now but in my 20's the Dentist advised me to have mine out as though they weren't moving they could later and it wasn't the sort of op you wanted later in life. All 4 came out under GA and apart from the quack dentist having to take me back in to theatre as I was coming round as he'd forgotten to stitch up the wounds/too lazy to do it right first time I was pretty much OK within a week (I do remember spurting blood all over his face as he was trying too stitch me up so there was some sort of of karmic payback for only doing half a job the first time).

Are you salt water gargling? That should help with the wounds/infection (unless advice has changed since mine were done)

Salt gargling is the most effective thing for tooth/gum pain I've ever found.

I had some removed a few years ago and still get issues from the holes occasionally.

I have - it is noticeable for a while - but does settle

if you are in lots of pain - you may have dry socket - and that needs further drugs (did you suck through a straw or smoke? it can dislodge the 'healing plug' .. blurgh.

My only naughty moment was on the Friday it was done. I took a sip of the wife's red wine and immediately regretted it as I managed to dislodge the clot and my mouth promptly filled with blood. Cue biting down on a rolled up piece of kitchen roll for the next two hours. Other than that, not had a drop of alcohol.
Other than that, gargling/sluicing with salt water, trying not to eat on that side, all the usual. I have the follow up on Saturday so I can describe my last fortnight and I'm sure the surgeon will brush it off and continue telling me what a great piece of work it was.

I was surprised how 'surgical' it all was. I thought it would be in chair, albeit in a private hospital. Only when I was told to don the open back gown, surgical stockings and disposable pants the penny dropped. I could have been done under GA or sedation, but it would have meant being picked up or a taxi from the west end. 'Bollocks to that', thought I, 'I'll be dead 'ard'. Fuck me, 20 minutes of digging, drilling, pulling, heaving, snapping, levering, draining and stitching. Never again.
My thoughts of a quick escape were quickly dashed as they said I'd be sat for two hours, face swelling like a balloon and a tampon string hanging from the corner of my mouth.

It'll vary, depending on who you ask.

I've had various busted bones, including pelvis over the years and I'd happily put removal of a wisdom tooth and the consequential aftermath up there as one of the most unpleasant experiences.

Try this, makes things taste funny for a while, but it definitely helps the healing process.

I had 2 of mine removed surgically which involved cutting away the bone. My brother had the same op and spent 3 days in hospital so I was quite surprised to be sent home after 45 minutes. I was told to take paracetamol if it hurt..the pain was indescribable so a trip the the chemist got me the most powerful stuff you can have without prescription. I was supposed to take 2 every 4 hrs with none overnight. They worked for 3 hours, so I kept munching my way through 2 boxes of them. Friday night at 1030 I head to bed feeling shit, but as I try to lay down my heart starts racing. My wife rang the hospital and they advised her to drive me straight there and under no circumstances to let me drive. We arrived at around pub chucking out time to find A&E full of the usual suspects including a bloke who had been hit with an axe, so I was shocked when the wife checked me in to be ushered straight through ahead of everyone to Ben met by an Aussie doctor who took the box of tablets and checked them in some book the size of a bible ( pre internet days) and then informed me that by his calculations I had consumed more than a gramme of caffeine in less than 24 hrs but luckily I appeared to have a strong heart which hadn’t gone ‘pop’.. the next 2 days were pretty uncomfortable with the pain and the after effects of overdosing. ( I had to beg the receptionist to alter my medical record from OD to accidental OD in case it was ever seen by work .

Moral of the rambling tail ...don’t be fooled by over the counter meds, and wisdom tooth pain is horrific.

I was in my 20s when I had all 4 impacted* wisdom teeth removed. My dentist extracted them with an anaesthetist giving me gas so I bad no idea about the hammer and chisel, the pliers or the foot in my chest as he pulled them out. I suffered no after effects and was eating my tea two hours later. Not everyone is that lucky and this experience is probably why I had no fear of going to the dentist.

*The lower teeth were trying to grow along the jaw, pushing my other teeth forward. The upper ones were emerging sideways towards my cheeks.

I read this with interest as all 4 of mine seem to have appeared recently. They've been causing a bit of discomfort and moving all my front teeth around like a Terry Gilliam animation. Being a bloke I haven't of course seen a dentist in 145 years, but was wondering whether I should to see if I ought to have them removed.

Don't think I will now

Had one removed a few years ago, after the usual jab in the gum. Came out first tug and pain free, must have been my lucky day :)

I had a wisdom tooth out about five or six years ago, so when I was a young man of about 65. The dentist told me it was infected, prescribed some anti-biotics and he took it out a couple of weeks later. Obviously there was some pain but nothing like you describe, but hey, I'm tough. Maybe you should just MTFU*. :P

Dentist? Pfft! Maxillofacial surgeon, if you don't mind, sir.

Must ask him for some of those disposable pants tomorrow. They were like a cheap string vest material that showed just enough cock and balls to be alluring, without slutty. Paired with the poky-out pubes, I reckon Mrs. Gremlin will be like putty in my hands when she sees me in them.

Just today I got a letter inviting me to make an outpatient appointment for a consultation on removing an impacted wisdom tooth. The dentist said in March, just before everything kicked off, that she was going to make a referral to take it out.

Needless to say this thread has cheered me up no end.

They were popular in the early 1970s. There wasn't a dry gash in the house* when you dropped your jeans to do the reveal.

You can still buy them, though why the fuck you'd want to...

Had one out about 12 years ago, wanted to give me the twilight sleep but as I was dead hard (skint) I took the Tesco value option. I can remember some tool hammering off my jawbone, loud cracking noises and it coming out in bits. Got home, necked a couple of trammies and it was fine. Certainly hurt less than with it in......
