One slightly annoying thing about the bike is that while is has the official Honda top box and case, I can't get my laptop to take to work in any of them. A full face lid fits in the top box as it's tall but not wide. Maybe this wasn't an issue ten years ago, I dunno. Even more annoying is that I left my old top box on the KTM as it was scruffy and took up a load of room in the garage. Oh well, you live and learn.

I know what you mean though, my top box is only 32 litres or something, luckily I only have a small laptop for work though so can get it in diagonally. Given that's what's called a scooter case I'm surprised a proper Honda touring case isn't wider though.

That distinction is blurred at best . The kind of gearbox in your bike is no different to the kind in plenty of cars billed as "auto".
If you ain't gotta change gears yourself, it's an auto innit?
(You can change gear 'manually' on a Suzuki Burgman but I don't remember anyone claiming they weren't automatic).

But that's the beauty of that VFR having the gear lever too, you have the choice if you want to go old skool.

When I had DCTs I first thought D mode was a waste of time and hardy ever used it as it changed up so early. After a while I realised it is useful when leisurely riding about. S mode the rest of the time but you're only ever a button push from the right gear. I very rarely wound the throttle open to get it to change down, I just pushed the button 99% of the time. I loved DCT on a bike and wish my Ducati had it instead of manual box.

Fitted some R&G crash bungs to the bike today. I figured that the panel I had to drill through was a separate panel so it would be relatively easy to revert if someone wanted to in the future so having the extra protection to the more expensive main painted panels was a good idea considering the weight of the bike. I'm sure that they're not everyone's cup of tea but I think that they're a good idea. You can get them that are offset to the engine mounting bolt but having had those snap when the bike was dropped at a standstill I didn't want to fit those.
R&G provide some templates that work very well to get the hole in the right place and even though they weirdly print of a full page a4 containing a QR code to load up a webpage with instructions that you then print off, the quality is very good.

As it's mounted where the R should be and it's got R&G on the end, does that make your bike a VFR&G?

Same bungs I got for mine. I know a few knock R&G but folk and engine sliders I got seemed decent and fitted well. Biggest problem I had was getting torque right whilst getting the angle of the bung right at the same time

Nearly 500 miles and three weeks in and I really love this bike. Don’t miss the clutch, love the power, the weight isn’t an issue, cruising at speed is way better than the ktm and the gearbox allows really easy slow speed handling and filtering. Top bike.

Found out why the steering was slower than I expected from this bike. Turns out the tyre pressure gauge I used was broken and the tyres were 5psi down each. Unsurprisingly at the correct pressure it’s way better. I think that this is one of the best all round bikes I’ve had. I may have bought it on a whim but I’m very glad I did. It’s what I expected my blackbird to be but even better and far far far better than the blackbird turned out to be.
