Re: Euro tunnel and beyond.
Best way to travel I’ve always found, easy to talk yourself into another beer, take a detour because you think it might be fun, go somewhere other than the plan.
Sounds like a great trip but I’m the same, you kinda run out of steam after a bit and turn for home.
Mick.

Quite like riding on my own but the evenings can drag a bit if you're eating/drinking on your own. Probably go a bit non-stir crazy after about 3 weeks unless you're communing with the natives or hitching up with a few others for odd days here and there.

Re: Euro tunnel and beyond.
The gs in all fairness has been superb. It's extra heavy with all the shit I'm lugging so care needed when fannying around.
I've got to sort out the Google satnav. Taking me on some right dodgy roads. Finding tonight's digs was almost frightened at times, very narrow tracks up in the hills, my fault i suppose because I chose the place, it's just i didn’t realise quite where it was, jeez.
Eventually found it, christ, its all little gobbled alleyways. Went for a wander after booking in and got lost, There seems to be one bar that sells beer, pizza and cake, could be worse. Fcuked off with pizza though.
Apircale, its east of Nice and up in the hills. Lovely little place but maybe too much. I'll be happy staying somewhere normal tomorrow night.
How the older folk get about gok. Tiny alleys, slippery cobbles and millions of dodgy steps.

Re: Euro tunnel and beyond.
On to Mezel...been pissing down most of the day. Had about 6 hrs on bike today. Waterproofs and big boots.
From last night's digs, it was a run down to the coast then west to Cannes. Passed Monaco on high road and couldn't be arsed to drop down for a good look, so on i went.
Found route Napoleon and followed in torrential rain to Castellane. From here, its a left hander onto the D952 and the Verdon gorge. You can ride a loop and brings you back on route N higher up. Superb scenery to be had.
That got me to tonights hotel in Mezel fcuk the tent. Heading home from here over the next few days. Then I'll be having a good long rest.

The Route de Napoleon is on the top of my 'list' for riding over here. There's another route that is similar but starts in Chamonix and sort of joins some of Route Napoleon, but it goes across more of the col's - apparently!
Shame about the rain, but the views look amazing

Re: Euro tunnel and beyond.
Been there, done that on a GS...two up (no camping gear...no room ). Did a trip to the Puy de Dome, with all our hiking gear though, on a K12LT and the satnav took us to places where I was really pleased about the reverse gear on it). It's OK saying 'avoid autoroutes' but it really needs an 'avoid anything not billiard table smooth' for those sort of trips.
We should have a NO pizza party to welcome you home.

Problem with my Google maps im using. I put in avoid toll and motorways so it gets you on the road you want, but it'll take you off it again, up some poxy track just to rejoin 6 inches up the road.

Re: Euro tunnel and beyond.
Long ride today, over 7 hours. Knackered. Metabief, top end of Jura mountains and fantastic riding it was. Warm sunshine all day, forest roads in the mountains with lots of sweeping corners and nice surface.
Bad bit, this poxy hotel has no food, kitchen closed. They bullshit, saying, "oh sorry sir it's just tonight" It's a sking hotel and its dead almost. Mountain bikes in summer, but I aint seen one yet.
They advertise bar, restaurant and free breakfast, I've complained and the bloke here has opened the bar for me, so I've got beer.
Last night's hotel was ace, did us curry, had a nice verander to sit under. Chatting to two Czech lads all night. On bikes, an R9T and a super adventure. Good lads and spoke better English than me.
Smaller places definitely best. Not many pic's today, I wanted to keep moving. Further north tomorrow.

Re: Euro tunnel and beyond.
I've driven through a part of the Jura area (Grenoble to Geneva, not on the motorway!). There's an amazing resistance memorial carved into the rock face at one point. I'll try and find a link. Gorgeous area tho
Too late for skiers and too early for mountain bikes. Right at the start of the road cycling time, but too much snow on the mountains/mountains too wet from melting snow for mountain biking tourists!! But you're right. Out of season small places are best!!Dodgy69 wrote: ↑Tue May 30, 2023 5:47 pmBad bit, this poxy hotel has no food, kitchen closed. If you were this side of Geneva, I'd wave. But you won't be able to see me from there!!

Re: Euro tunnel and beyond.
Penultimate night out. Jargeau in the Loire valley. Nice town on the river, south of Paris. Nice hotel doing food and brecky, hallelujah.
That place last night was a disgrace. They told me I'd have breakfast sent to my room at 8am... 8.15 no sign so fucked off. I owe them 2 pints.
Headed west and north, into a bit more France. What a great decision, car free country road through forests and fields. I went for miles only seeing a couple of cars. Throw in the sunshine and I've have a great day, about 6 hrs gs time.
I've no doubt some of you know the area, so you'll know what I mean. Gonna have one last night somewhere nearer the tunnel, so I can get home Friday night.
That statue was something different, facing all the traffic entering town. Nice.
