1100 Africa twin DCT

Post by Couchy »

today I got the chance to borrow a friends new 1100 Africa twin DCT for a few hours. Always liked the 1000 I had so jumped at the chance. Rode to his on the MV and as always enjoyed that, 900 miles on it now. Soon as he wheeled the AT out I’d forgotten how big they were at least compared to the MV. Loads of space and legroom although seat felt hard it proved to be very comfy. The dash and fairing seem to stretch out miles in front and it felt low at the back, tyres were 70/30 karoo’s so quite knobbly. Once I sussed the dash and how to put it in gear I was off. DCT takes some getting used to and this one had a lot more modes than previous ones which I’d dismissed, once used to it and in a mode I liked and adding an occasional manual shift it became second nature. The MV is quicker but not enough it would lose the AT. On bumpy twisty back roads even on these tyres it was possible to keep up a quick pace, I know from my old AT the chassis is enough to have fun on track so it’s never the limiting factor in the road. With TC on minimum it was possible to get it triggered out of slow corners when nearly upright, having had these tyres before they did the same on my 1000. So it was ok being ridden fast but the huge difference with the MV is it was very well behaved ridden normally and slowly. I had a great two hours on it so will give some thought to adding one to the garage. The MV felt tiny revvy and stiff on the ride home too but still great fun. Do I need two bikes ? Who knows !

Before I read your quote I was thinking 'That's a big old bus'.
I wouldn't fancy picking it up if it ever went over

They’re not small but neither am I tbh. My last one was ok on gentle trails and this would be the same with some common sense thrown in. With the chance of some Spanish trips that take in a bit of gentle laning I’m tempted.

Always thought a DCT one of these would have my name on it, but when I had the xt660x I never liked the bigger front wheel, so it kinda took one of these off my list? Sounds like I should put one back on.

Oh,and it'd be a good stablemate for the MV. G'wan...

Today was the day, had an awesome ride down on MV…..just before dealer engine light came on lol. Turned off and on and it cleared. Dealer took MV for a test ride as apparently they’re having electronic issues with the latest ones….obviously mine is fine. Deal done and I’m off on the AT sharpish 😂

Stopped to adjust levers, seat, suspension and set electronic modes to my liking. Basically full power, a small amount of TC and no anti wheelie. Damping needed a tweak and that’s it. Had a great 80 mile cross country ride home

My previous AT thread wasn’t on here but here’s a few pics expect the same from this one !

The MV lasted nearly 3 months!...and was traded in for a Honda. Crumbs!.

Enjoy! It looks tiny for you! A good mate here has one and loves it but has dropped it and now worries about dropping it. But he's a short arse (well, 5'8 - so a smidge taller than me and I feel like a shortarse on the bikes I like!)

Have loads of fun - trackday pics (of this one) next :D :D

Had this a little while now and had another ride today, trying to work out why I don’t like it as much as my original one. As standard it’s 10kg heavier as it’s dct but my original one with all its mods was nearly 17kg lighter than standard so this one is some 27kg heavier. I’m guessing that’s why it feels ermmm heavier ? It’s a bit quicker but tbh it just doesn’t feel as good as the original.

There’s def part of me wants to get a 1000 and make it the same as the one I sold, who knows not me 😂

That looks nice! Might ditch the crash bars and fit a tail tidy to mine...
