Having watched my grandmother spend her last three ish years fading away, I 100% agree. And I would 100% help myself on the way - if unable to, I have a deal with a mate. Younger than me but if she isn't around, I'll make a deal with another mate!! Abso-fucking-lutely no way am I living in a 'care' home, ever!!

Since we retired, our expenditure each year has been about £25k.
Biggest cost is the private health care about £3,000 a year.
We get about £10k income from apartment and draw the rest from savings.
Spent about £50k doing the villa up, but we're seeing the pension pots rise nicely each year.

I get state pension in 2 years so dragging about £15k out of my personal pensions tax free each year while I can. Adding that to our ISAs.

Without getting too deep here, it sounds like you're going to have lots of money 'left' .... what's the logic behind that ?

That's why I want to buy a SM bike.
Also we just worked out that from now on, we have £10k a year for 'treats'.
Mrs Y is going to India next week for a 2 weeks yoga retreat.

My mate and his girlfriend are in India, 4 month's this time. She's just done a yoga retreat and loved it. He's hired an enfield and goes fishing and hooning about. Very cheap to hire.

I think it's unlikely that I'll want to do much travelling when I'm retired, I have the capability to go anywhere in the world right now, but there isn't anywhere I fancy going that I haven't already been to. I have to go to India twice this year, I've already been all over the country a few times, one trip will be for a couple of weeks because I've got a lot on, I like India but I wouldn't go if I didn't need to just because travelling is a pita.

My old grandad went halfway around the planet in WW2 and when he got back in 1946 he never left the UK again, he said he'd already seen what there was elsewhere and was quite happy with holidays in St Ives.
I share the same sentiment, there is nowhere better in the world than the UK in the summer (if you can find a quiet spot), it's just that sadly the weather lets us down a lot.

My wife has decided to go part-time at her job and wants me to cut my hours, probably to a 4 day week. Her cut in hours is because she will have to help more with her Mum who has dementia and she knows as her Mum declines, she'll be needed to help out more.

Her wish for me to cut my hours is so we can get more time together and make a point of doing something other than caring for her Mum. I'm sort of coming around to it, but I actually really like what I do and enjoy being at work. Plus, apart from the obvious less pension contributions from myself and my employer, I'm not sure what the other implications of reduced hours will be, if any?

I bought a pair of Skechers and didn't get on with them at all. The sole/heel is too soft so they ended up in the back of the car as something to change into for driving after walks etc. I prefer proper trainers with firmer soles that are a bit more designed to cope with pronation - Saucony work for me.

Regarding pensions and investments, which of these portfolios do you believe is best for growth ?

I'd of thought the defensive was potentially, safer, less growth, less loss and aggressive potentially more growth, more loss, but it don't look like that to me.

Risk level on left from top to bottom and shows % change per year and all time on right 2015. It's slightly cropped but you get the picture.

Only for the pension nurds which I'm one of these days.

TBH it doesn't tell me much other than the brief interlude of Truss/Kwarteng stoofed the bond market. I assume that 'aggressive' has higher charges than the 'defensive' too. a) It's a v short time frame and b) it's (obvs) what's happened in the past and 'previous performance yadda yadda...'

In other news, apparently lots of people forget to change their pension nominee when they split up. That must be fun when you find your partner's pension is heading off to the ex!
