Yes, the Spiders from Mars were really from Hull.

Apart from the drummer, who was from Driffield and is the only one still alive.

It was quite something to see it all live as a callow yoof - especially as I got a free ticket. It was at an Oxford venue and half way through Bowie complained about the acoustics. He couldn't hear himself and was over-singing and losing his voice. He explained and said 'We're going to have to do some rock and roll' and launched into 'White Light/White Heat'. Epic. :D

I've got the 3 CD 'Bowie at the Beeb' set, and on that there is a version of White light, white heat from one of their Peel sessions. I remember hearing it on one of Peel's programs in the early 70s and being totally blown away by it. It still sounds ace 50 years on.

Yup. All these years on I can close my eyes and be there again. :D It was one of those things that you went to and don't worry how you're going to get back to your billet. I don't remember how I did. :D

I'm going to get one of those T-shirts...'I may be old but I saw all the great bands'.

There's probably another thread there.

One of my regrets is that I never saw Bowie in his Ziggy phase. I saw him in the late 70s and actually managed to wangle a photo pass for the gig, and to do so had to go face to face with Harvey Goldsmith. He was certainly not someone to mess with. Herewith a couple of pics (B/W). His attire fits with the general theme of this thread... :)

That is not many light years from Hull!

I wonder there’s probably some reason behind Bowie wearing that, relatable to the music at the time etc etc. whereas Sam Smith is just a weirdo cunt 🤦‍♂️

I like his Taddy Lager, I find the 'Alpine' a bit too weak.

David Byrne's big white suit was attire, and what attire it was. Everything Bowie wore was attire and it was all worn with aplomb. Laddo up there^^ looks like a strange hybrid between a company that fixes punctures and my local paper shop's helium filled balloons. I have no idea how talented he is but my guess is we'll all be playing stuff from the past when he's sadly forgotten.

I'm no fan, but unless you've been living under a rock for the last decade you'd know he's kind of a big deal, like on an Adele level. He's got an Oscar, along with a bazillion other awards, he did a Bond theme!

I don't think he'll get forgotten anytime soon... especially for that outfit.

I think that ridiculous outfit that Sam Smith wore to the Brits was actually intended as some kind of homage to Bowie's earlier attire. But it didn't work because he just looks an overweight prat in tacky plastic.

Ah. That's me located under my rock then. I knew nothing about his Oscar or Bond theme.

I've heard Adele though. She's quite good.

That's me emerging form under a rock then, I'd not heard of him until this thread.
