Plan was for a brisk ride around the cotswolds, everything from wide open nsl to nadgery lanes.
I explained my unbreakable rules, told him that I would like to 'make progress' when the opportunity arises, he's on a 600+ bike so not slow.
Soooooo, 1st nsl overtake. There was enough space for us to clear both cars, but I thought, nope, don't pressurize the lad, so I waited......and waited........and waited.
We did 3 miles like that, plenty of opportunities came and went, and then as we approached a 40 limit, off he goes!
Granted road conditions today were mixed, but he seemed focused on the 20ft in front of him, so he spent most of his time reacting rather than reading the road.
Took him up Fish Hill, he loved that!
And Dad wants a sitrep too,

Eyes on main beam instead of dip, use the attributes of a bike ie the ability to get past things and create your own space rather than follow in a queue and have to react rather than plan and anticipate

I'm not an instructor, but I do have 40+ years of driving experience, a bit of advanced training and was doing it as a favour.
Perhaps he was nervous being followed, but he needed to be more 'assertive' and look a lot further up the road imo.

My eldest step lad was the same when i rode with him in the summer after passing his test January .....waaaay over cautious on open roads behind slow traffic when i was following so we swapped and he was better when i lead but he doesnt want to be radioed up at the moment which is fine as its his choice but i could help him loads but dont want to push him to do something he isnt happy with.

As it stands the offer is there to radio up and instruct him more but only when he is comfortable with it
