Same here, if I suggest they deserved it then it ends up as an argument and I've offended two people.

Dunno. I don't set out to offend anyone. I was bought up under the guide of if you haven't got anything nice to say, then don't say anything. If I find people offensive I'll more than likely walk off than waste my time talking to someone like that. That said I'm not shy of a retort if the situation isn't avoidable and actually calls for one. I'm deffo with Al Capone on that one!

The trouble with "telling it like it is" is that there is very seldom one "it" in real life.

You're basically just saying "telling it like I think, but with no acceptance there might be another viewpoint".

Actually an interesting question for me. In real life, I am extremely happy go lucky. Bit of a scatterbrain and hopelessly disorganised, virtually everything I say is made in good humour and even the darkest subject can be spun into a light hearted funny.

Somehow and I honestly do not know why, this does not translate into the written word. I think it must be to do with the careful choice of the correct wording and an attempt to keep my propositions logically precise.

The written word appears to have a mind of its own (probably the one in the listeners head) and may have a different "meaning" to them than the standard English dictionary version.

People seem to live to be offended. If they're not offended by something that can be misconstrued, then they'll get offended on someone else behalf!

I've not noticed that,however disagreeing with someone isn't the same as being offensive,not initially anyway.

It's not as if I make a point to offend people, and generally avoid it.
But I also wont walk on eggshells around someone who's being an arse.

If yer deliberately going out to offend people regularly theres a strong possibility that you need to get a life.

I'm not sure how you would notice tbh, as I say, the vast majority of my drafted posts get deleted and I deliberately don't get involved with opinionated discussions

Like @demographic and Taipan, I tend to avoid a response rather than offend someone. In general, I rarely have conversations where I need to get to the point that I might offend someone!

I do however have the most horrific 'tone of voice' that I can't generally hear. It's my mother's you know I've worked really hard to lose most of the family traits, but that tone of voice can really sound awful, and be offensive to some. 100% NOT intentional, but I haven't worked out how to get rid of it
