My Volvo sunroof leaked. Never seen the point in having it when i had air con so i just ran Gaffa tape round the thing. Solved.

The foil air con tape is the best option IME, it doesn't seem to affected by weather nor UV light.

Is that Butyl tape? I have used that in the past and its bloody excellent stuff. Can be painted over also.

I used it on a Renault 9 or 11 sunroof, until it was obvious the car wouldn't pass another MOT test. The tape was removed and I used let my spawn climb in and out of the car via the sunroof.

Checked roof drainage. Water is going where it's meant to. My weekend faffery appears to have cured the problem, but I did remove another piece of broken tile.
Today's BIG storm hasn't got here yet, so time will tell.

Not windy at all today. The roof is plywood (or OSB) on the trusses, then roofing felt, then battens to hang/nail the tiles to, then the tiles. Tiles are about 1in thick. I can't imagine how much the roof weighs.

In related news:
Neighbor had a leak, hired a crew to fix it for $2000, they didn't. They came back, replaced another section of tiles.. for another $2000, still didn't fix it, then came back again, found the actual leak, fixed that for $250 & refused to refund any of the previous $4000.
They have a different crew coming in to replace most of the roof in the hear future. That crew is from about 100 miles away (Bakersfield). When they show up we will have them take a butchers at our roof. We only have a leak issue with that one valley, but there are several others. They've all been to the same party.
I'm going to get up in that part of the attic in the next few days to put chrimble deco's away, at that time I will get across to the other side of the house & take a look at the underside of the roof.

Right now I have a couple of plastic sheets arranged to catch & direct the water into a 5gal bucket. (just looked, there's an inch of water in the bucket)

I've been out for fish and chips with a French friend - introduced him to malt vinegar on chips He actually liked that and appreciated the fish n chips. Was a bit weird for him a the bar we went to, which is normally full of a decent mix of French & English, was rammed full of loud Brits!! LOL Once they moved on, it was a bit nicer

Then the Argentinian friend joined us to chat - he's learning French so I introduced him to the French so that he had someone to practice with.

Was a cool evening - its been chucking it down with snow all day and has continued all evening It's great!! The evening was good company and good fun - and more rum than usual

2in of water in the bucket...

The area where most of the water was dripping under the overhang the other day is dry today (that small triangle doodad to the far right), The area where the secondary drip was is wet (far left end of the next bay).



My Heath Robinson water collection/flood mitigation effort...the leak hits the plastic sheet taped to the window, the other plastic sheet prevents the water from splashing across the room. Water goes from between the plastic sheets into the bucket.




Roofer bloke is coming by on Wednesday morning. Prince Harry's ghetto got 5in of rain between 3am & 11am this morning. The worse part is coming ashore this afternoon. They've ordered full evacuation of Montecito, Santa Paula, Carpenteria & other towns in that area. I guess Harry, The Meg & Orca Winfrey etc will be slumming it at the Beverley Hills Hotel

Looks like I'm fighting a losing battle here. The plastic sheet window deal is working for the leak from the top of the window.... but now it looks like water has got into the wall under the window & is coming into the house under the sill plate. Good news is the house sits on a concrete slab & the floor covering is waterproof vinyl plank stuff so that won't be damaged by the water. I've rolled up the rug & moved that, & the couch to the other side of the room.

The bucket was half full by 8pm so I've emptied that. Will check it again before I hit the sack.

AND.. there's now another issue. There's a VERY faint smell of gas in the laundry room, barely detectable.

The house is about 35 years old & that's the point where they start to fall apart here.





Just checked the bucket again & it's filling at the rate of 2in/hour, but the worst of the storm is supposed to be done by midnight, it's 9pm right now. Gonna be drizzle all night & then the SHTF again about 7-8am

I was a bit surprised by the roof tbh. The ridge tiles look to be loose laid and decorative more than weather tight and the roof tile arrangement generally looks like an awful lot depends on the integrity of the felt underneath.

WooT! Weather guessers are now saying dry for the next three days

Was out running errands this morning & the apartments across from Costco have plastic sheeting held down with battens on every building in the complex.

All 14 structures have failed roofs:




Costco had dozens of plastic totes throughout the store catching water from roof leaks.
