What bike was your first indicated 180mph on?

Post by Yorick »

I got fed up of waiting for this one :obscene-birdiedoublered:

I think mine was on my ZX9RC2 in 1999. Felt quick.
But then saw indicated 180 probably over 1,000 times on track over the years. Doesn't feel fast on track really.

Even saw a genuine 187 on my Satnav at Bedford aerodrome.

Gonna start a new thread later after watching silly speed vids on YouTube last night.

Hayabusa I'd borrowed off a mate. He'd bought it that day and I took it out to test

It has a Speedo trip thing so it recorded the max speed, 320kph on the A33. It felt fast.

He cried!

1998 Fireblade, with a tooth off the front sprocket.

Indicated well over 180mph, was probably nearer 160 properly.

Also managed 180mph on a ZX9R, which apparently would have been much closer to the real speed as the ZX9 was a good chunk faster in a straight line.

First bike was probably the 9r again but a genuine GPS calibrated speedo was my ZK4 GSXR 1000, speedo stopped at 186mph which the speedo recall showed but I reckon because of the slight downhill section it was probably faster.

I’ve done it on every bike pretty much over the years, any bike that is capable of it.

GSXR 1000 K9

BMW S1000RR K67

187-189 leant over and just after that the front lifts slightly @ 175-180 as the bars shake, there’s a small crest on the road there.

A ZZR1100 came close with favourable conditions. Usually the speedo stopped at 170 odd.

The ZX9R was similar to the ZZR.

My GSXR1000 K3 stopped at 186,so the Suzook was probably the winner.

That's why the thread was 'indicared' I have no idea what real speeds I've done are, my 916 was tunes, blueprinted and gasflowed and I topped it out
I topped out multiple R1s etc but these are all before gps became a day to day thing, so it may have been 170, 160 or anything really.

Rule of thumb was usually 5-10% depending on gearing. Nowadays gearing doesn’t affect speedo readout as it takes speed from the abs ring but Speedo’s will still be out, I find the newer bikes are closer to true speed but not quite.

Comparing my current bike's speedo with a gps,I find the lower speeds are pretty much bang on,but once over 60mph to whatever, there can be 5 to 8mph of a discrepancy on the optimistic side.

I think the only bike I've seen over 180 on the speedo was my 97 SRAD, which would indicate over 190, realistically it was doing between 160 and 170, fastest bike I've ridden was probably my 98 R1, which would indicate high 170s, my 2002 GSXR750 would indicate similar speeds.

It was either running in a chain at Jurby on a sorted 4xv in a paddock jacket, or on a Blackbird, 2 up, with the owner on the back, screaming again! (Same idiot who owned the cbr1000)

On my EXUP with the carb webs cut out and a race can. Would go up to 185, although the last nubers were 180. I was about half the width I am now.

I think my K12 Arseport would probably do it, it certainly feels faster than an EXUP but the one time I gave it the full beans I thought my head was coming off over 140.

Honda Blackbird belonging to a colleague i used to go racing with. He gave me the keys to go and have a play while he was in a meeting ....i found a long stretch of fairly quiet tarmac and saw 185 mph then kept my eyes firmly facing forward but it felt like it was still pulling

1 and only time i went that fast on a bike as i havent owned a bike that goes that fast so only on borrowed kit

Sounds bout the same as the GSX-S, not much out at all at 30 but at 80 it's 5-6 mph out

Fastest for me was my 1996 Fireblade racing an R1 on the M1. He bottled it at an indicated 155 and I thought I'm here now so might as well carry on. Hit an indicated 172 with a little left. I'm guessing around a real 160- high 150. Felt bloody fast with my legs being pulled off the bike, visor pressed into my nose and gentle motorway corners becoming proper bends. I carried on for a bit and managed Wembley to Watford very quickly indeed. When I pulled up at my brother's house he wasn't expecting me for another 15 mins :D

That’s because speedo error is based on percentage, so it’ll be out the same at 30 as it is 80, 5% equates to 1.5mph and at 80 its 4mph. Or in your case closer to 7% so 2.1mph at 30mph and 5.6mph at 80mph. The basis is usually 5%-10% for the majority of vehicles cars or bikes.

Never had anything that quick.

I’ve seen 175 on my ZZR 1100 solo and 155 on my 750 GSXR with Mrs S on the back.

In fact I think the GS is the only bike I’ve had that I haven’t tried to see how quick it’ll go.

I must be getting old.
