Anyone ever made a grab rail?

Post by Le_Fromage_Grande »

I'd like a grab rail on my GSXS 750, Renntec make one for it, but it looks shite, so I'm considering making one, anything I need to take into account, is it just a piece of bent tube that's bolted to the bike?

I've got the Shad panniers for my bike which comes with a good bracket that the grab rail can bolt to, so it isn't a massively complicated shape to make.

The Renntec ones are just a bit of bent steel tube welded to brackets. I daresay the material itself (the steel) will be a certain quality (the minimum that Renntec can get away with no doubt), for strength.

Welded brackets will (obviously) be a better idea than just drilling holes into the tube to bolt up.

I was considering using pipe clamps if I can find some that look strong enough to hold the tube to my bracket, but I've not seen any strong enough yet, I wouldn't trust my welding on anything structural.

You could even add a sissy bar pad to that :D

Maybe it looks a little goofy, but I can't imagine you'll build something that looks better and is equally strong using pipe clamps.
If you *really* want to do it, find a better-looking grab rail of about the right shape as cheap as you can, and adapt it on. Lot of hassle though.

It's not a personal dig, just a cost/benefit estimation which is admittedly based on me not you.

Maybe you have a proper pipe bender, I don't. Maybe you can do powder coating in your shed, I can't. I don't know.
But how bad is the Renntec one really, and how much money, time, and effort will you spend on making something that's at least as good as it?

Does the GSXS happen to share a seat pad with anything else in the range? Or even a seat latch, if that's how Renntec are bolting their grabrail on? Maybe there's an existing handle from someone else that's more suitable.

Is it the rails or passenger handle that you need (or both?) because Suzuki do a passenger handle that looks  (at a Suzuki price :( ie >£100).

I wasn't being serious, sorry if that didn't come across.
I've got a pannier bracket that I'm going to attach the grabrail to, so that it comes from underneath, I doubt if I'll ever actually make it and I'm just floating ideas, if you look at www.shad.es you'll see their top box carrier, that uses the same bracket and ends up more where I want

Depends what your passenger prefers, but IME the aftermarket "hoop behind the back" type of grab rail is so uncomfortable to use as to be basically worthless.

How about getting something off another bike and mashing up some brackets? I've been told before that these off a Divvy are pretty "handy" due to the rubberised coating, for example. If you can find somewhere to put them, they're pretty integrated to the fairing.

Sure there would be less ugly and more adaptable options off more-recent bikes. Go obscure, and you'll also get cheap.

It popped up in images when I googled, but now, not sure it will fit your model - its says GSX750 and 750F. The price is eye-watering too.
