I've grown up with dogs my whole life, I don't own any but my family have always had them and other animals to boot. Not one of them was afraid of fireworks. I love fireworks, as you may have noticed. Do you think the animals could be picking up on an owners anxiety?

One friend has a few dogs in the time I've known her and all of them have hidden and quivered. Another friends dog runs into the garden and barks at fireworks with it's tail wagging - she tells him he's a good boy for telling the fireworks off.

The first friend spends a lot of money on anit-anxiety dog treatment which isn't working

I grew up in the countryside and we had dogs. They wouldn't be bothered by fireworks but then there was a reasonable amount of shooting at various times of year and the birdscarer shooty noise thingies. Plus the local quarries exploding stuff most days!!

I 100% think the nervous dog thing is exacerbated by owners nerves/thinking it will bother the animals

Like kids growing up to be scared of spiders or dentists - there's no reason for it, but they learn!!

Some will be nervous naturally, but most learn/are taught (IMO). Friends take their dogs out specifically when they are young to areas where there is shooting or fireworks (when the age/time of year matches!). Theirs just curl up and snooze through it

If a dog cowers because of loud bangs - best ignore it and carry on as normal. Reward good, ignore bad. Simples.

We have 3 dogs, two of which aren’t bothered by fireworks and the other is terrified, we’ve tried ignoring it and not feeding the anxiety all to no avail. So we have to drug her if we have any fireworks, thunderstorms and now heavy rain (on the flat roof/conservatory). We tried a fireworks CD to try and get her used to the noise but all that’s done is make her terrified of the speaker.

I find them boring and my money has been too hard earnt to set fire to it! The recession must have bit round here already as this is the quietest year for fireworks that I can ever remember!

Once upon a time cheapest fireworks were really cheap, 1d bangers. Every self-respecting teenager went out on 5 November with pockets stuffed with them, lobbing them around. An unlucky few got badly injured, most of us learned the hard way that being close to an explosion (even a very small one) is a very bad idea. Most of the bangs were 1d bangers, and they were loud, but not too loud.

Fireworks like that are now verboten. Fireworks are now large and very expensive and very LOUD. Bring back the 1d (probably 50p today) banger.

Fireworks at 10.30pm, in a city centre, irrespective of whether the dog is shit scared, is bang out of order.

As for Barbara Woodhouse et al, the dog in question is a Labrador, so ‘shouldn’t’ be bothered by loud noises, but he is, so bite me. He certainly isn’t anxious as a result of anxious owners. Either one or both of us have been around dogs for years and know enough to understand how to react around him.

We have done the ignoring, the rewarding of good behaviour etc, but he is still shit scared so I’m about to drag him outside and shoot him (what a dickhead comment).

It's one of the things that started me on making my own bread. 'Wholemeal' bread that weighs the same as a Warburtons (other makes are available) white loaf simply isn't wholemeal. Brown yes, wholemeal no.
