All quiet on the western front- film
Doesn't look like any local cinemas are showing this so will watch on Netflix. Looks good, although not sure that's the right word for it.

Sounds really well done, will hope it's available on DVD.
Amazingly good book.

Re: All quiet on the western front- film
I thought it was alright. Interesting take on the trenches from Germays perspective!
Re: All quiet on the western front- film
It's OK.
Tell you what is brilliant, though. SAS Rogue Heroes. They actually stick quite close to facts, albeit in a dramatised fashion.
What *really* makes it though, is the music. Who knew AC/DC, The Stranglers, Sham 69, Saxon and the Damned would fit so well with WWII desert warfare?
The scene where the SAS do the first hit on the German airfields, firefights as they withdraw and just as the planes start blowing up, the pounding drum solo, New Rose by the Damned! Utterly inspired

They actually had to tone down some of Blair Mayne's and Sterling's antics,as they thought people wouldn't believe them. Paddy was a psycho and him burning to death in his car in Ards was because folk were too frightened to help him.McSatan wrote: Thu Nov 03, 2022 1:38 pm It's OK.

As these films go, it was ok. Made a change to see a German version.Supermofo wrote: Sat Oct 15, 2022 9:23 pm Doesn't look like any local cinemas are showing this so will watch on Netflix. Looks good, although not sure that's the right word for it.
I've got a picture of my great uncle in the trench at the battle of Looes. He went over the top a few times apparently and managed to come home relatively unscathed, bar mental health problems. As did my granddad, who was a sniper.
When I watch these films I think of him, my granddad and others in the family and what they endured. They never spoke about it much.
I wonder what they would think of it?

Likewise with my Dad, who fought in WWII. The only comments I can remember are 'war is hell' and 'there are no atheists in the foxholes'. He was a gunner and was partially deaf in one ear. That was the side he made sure Mum sat on...Buckaroo wrote: Tue Nov 08, 2022 6:10 pm When I watch these films I think of him, my granddad and others in the family and what they endured. Re: All quiet on the western front- film
My Great Uncle went to war a Christian and came home an atheist! He would only walk his Daughter to the church doors but would not go into the church on her wedding. He said no God would allow what he had seen and went to his grave with the same opinion. He was a Japanese POW though and I don't think that went well for many...mangocrazy wrote: Tue Nov 08, 2022 6:57 pmLikewise with my Dad, who fought in WWII. Re: All quiet on the western front- film
I guess people find ways to deal with what they've seen. I can fully understand your Great Uncle's PoV. Being a PoW in a Japanese camp was probably as bad as it got in WWII. Ironically my Dad was a non-believer in his early years and only Got Religion in his 30s, being turned by the Jehovah's Witnesses of all people. He and Mum remained devout JWs for the rest of their lives. There's nowt so queer as folk...Taipan wrote: Thu Nov 10, 2022 2:59 pmMy Great Uncle went to war a Christian and came home an atheist! Re: All quiet on the western front- film
Indeed not. A friend of my Dad's survived being a Japanese POW, and he hated anything and anybody Japanese as long as he lived. I believe he returned all his medals in 1971 after Hirohito's visit to the UK. He was not amused.Taipan wrote: Thu Nov 10, 2022 2:59 pm He was a Japanese POW though and I don't think that went well for many...![]()

Re: All quiet on the western front- film
My grandfather was in Burma alongside the Gurkhas in WW2. He never once talked about it whereas, by contrast, my father never stops banging on about his peace-time military service.Taipan wrote: Thu Nov 10, 2022 2:59 pmMy Great Uncle went to war a Christian and came home an atheist!
