My first car was an Imp, making a massive 35bhp (claimed) it didn't power slide anywhere, it would wind up to 90mph (indicated), the steering got very light at speed.

It's one benefit over a Mini was that there was more room to have sex in an Imp - though I don't remember Rootes Group using that as part of their marketing campaign.

A mate of mine had a Hillman Imp in the early 70s that was 'tuned' - not sure how... It always seemed to have cooling problems. My overriding memory was being in the passenger seat as we were going over the Mountain from Ramsey to Douglas on the IoM and Trev was in a furious mood with his wife (not in the car) and was taking it out on the car. To this day I don't know how we got round the Creg without crashing. It could easily have gone all so horribly wrong.

But it didn't, thankfully.

He used to drive it like he stole it. The water pump started to squeal and when they dismantled it 6.5 ball bearings fell out (I think there were 12 or 13 originally).

My mate was a mechanic, and he kept his toolbox in the (front) boot for exactly the same reason. And in summer Trev would have the heater on to try and get as much heat as possible away from the engine...

I can understand why. If you looked at them from the front, with no load, the wheels were like this \ /. I think the Herald was like that too.

His wasn't the best car that a pupil drove to school though. One of them (a miner's son) used to arrive driving a new Escort Mexico. (It was his dad's though).
