Suggestions on gaming computer

Laptops have a tendency to overheat when used for gaming, desktops usually have far better airflow and cooling solutions.

'Making people' without a doubt, you'll get alot more bang for your buck. Then only downside is that they'll expect you to have some idea of what you want, but your kid should have that covered

My PS5 I put to sleep when bored and starts from the same spot again in less than 10 seconds.

Isn't that just on the Football Games?

I have built my last 3 PC's. It's a way of getting a good setup at a lesser cost but it can be a bit of a minefield with bus speeds etc. I need to upgrade my current setup as it happens and will be looking for a new Mobo/RAM and Processor so will keep my eye on this thread...

That's just not true, I have friends who are still playing AAA games on 6 year old machines.

My son (10) wants to play battleship building/fighting games. He has WoWS via my old PS4 but wants to play a couple of games that are only on steam so we were thinking of getting him a laptop that'll cover him for high school and these games which as far as I can tell definitely aren't AAA so hopefully not OOT on the running front.

But is this steam deck a better option?

My concern with proper PCs/laptops is whether they'll run the games well without us spending lots. It's for precisely this reason I have a PS5 as I don't need to understand all the specs etc.

If one of the uses for the computer is school work then the Steam Deck is probably a no then. It runs SteamOS (a version of Linux) and runs lots of games but there can be compatibly issues with some. A laptop is probably the best bet for convenience but budget is important here, how much are you wanting to spend? Bargains can be had and a lot of retailers do interest free purchase options or they did before Truss!

Yes, knew that a deck wouldn't work for School but wondered if we might be best separating the 2 if we had issues running games on the laptop which would probably be fairly budget. I checked on my Steam Deck and it says it is playable, the game is in early access so is not finished yet so might get better, if you are local to me you are welcome to come and take a look.

This bit worries me a bit from the comments in the reviews, sounds fairly buggy still and there's a difference being an adult and understanding what that means and being 10 years old and wanting to build your own dreadnaughts as I think that's what he most wants to do.
