Nostalgia - CBX & MTX

I've bought one of these, and one of these. The MTX because it's identical to the first road legal bike I had in 1983. It's D reg, done just over 1k miles, has never had an MOT, one owner, was kept in a garage and occasionally used as a field bike. The oil pump became leaky so it was disconnected and run on pre-mix, the owner basically forgot about it. Just need to fix the pump, replace the original tyres, get it MOT'd!

The CBX because it's identical to the first big bike I had. It's slightly tatty but everything is there and works, I'd forgotten what a peach the engine is, around 90bhp and hydraulic tappets, no valve clearances to arse about with! It rides beautifully just like I remember, only failed MOT on horn (replaced) and a weeping fork seal (to be replaced.) I'm in two minds whether to properly do it up, or just touch up and tidy it and ride it

I fancied a CBX750 because of the hydraulic tappets, never had one, someone I work with had a CB750F2N that had the same engine, it did over 100,000 miles and all that was wrong with it was a noisy alternator drive chain, and that didn't affect how it ran.

I loved mine, did about 50k miles on it with nothing other than oil/filter changes, C&S, tyres etc. That was back when I didn't regularly use a car. This one is in better nick than mine, it's bizarre, it's got 60k miles on it but original exhausts, all the little plastic bits that broke off mine are still there, and the footrest rubbers, bar switches, grips and so on are barely worn. The seat is in squashed/split state like you'd expect with that mileage. I think it must have been owned by someone who did a huge amount of motorway miles in a warm country....

I can’t remember the exact year of bike but I had a CBX550 which was essentially my first bike albeit it was in the 2000’s

I feel sorry for the CBX550, it should have been a really great bike, but it was the most cursed of Honda's 1980s bikes, inboard brakes and variable engine build quality.

MTX was an entertaining 125, dead easy to wheelie but 2nd gear would fall out of them on a regular basis and the 2 cogs were over £160 back in the early 90s. And they ATE spark plugs, you always carried a spare.

I always fancied a CBX750 too. I likes the look of the headlights and the console. I wonder if it had 16" front and 18" rear; and anti dive forks. It doesn't matter, it's a lovely looking thing. I did an off road riding holiday on an MTX125 many years ago too - another great bike.

Quite timely this thread- I'm finally clearing the sheds of my old house as it's sold, and just said goodbye to this old girl tonight- not without a slight pang of regret, but the big wad of cash he gave me helped soften the blow




It was a tough decision as to whether to keep it and bring it back to its former glory or get rid as I've owned it a long time- I bought it in 1982, raced it for a few years in the early 80s until I finally conceded that I was never going to win anything in MX, parked it up a few years later when it was well overdue a refresh, and have just moved it from house to house since then.
It was last run in 1985 ish, parked up after the last race and has just sat unloved since but when I dug it out of the shed last week, the wheels still turned, the brakes worked (relative term ), the motor turned over with compression, it has damping left in the shock, and the tyres have even held air for the last week

Anyway, it's now winging its way to Essex with its new owner ( a nice bloke called Gareth who also used to race one in the 80s ) to be competed in the twin-shock classic class, after of course a sympathetic rebuild / re-furb

Here we are way back when on a practice day, happy times!

I had a YZ125 similar to that, great little bike, it handled really, really nicely, but did need a piston ring every meeting.

Saw this little vid on youtube yesterday, got me all misty-eyed from the olden days, particularly as at the time I was racing the YZ my best mate had a 490 Maico too exactly like that one

Good spot ( although I guess the file name gives a clue ), It was indeed , and was dead handy for me at the time for testing etc

Considering the potential for carnage/anarchy , and where it was, I was always amazed that it worked as well as it did and was allowed to continue for as long as it did
