High pitch noise while riding Multistrada

Post by Hawkman »

I've noticed that above 55mph I can hear a high pitched whistling noise while riding the Mullti (950). The only thing I've changed recently has been my lid, which is now a Schuberth E1 - I've taken the peak off etc and it hasn't made a difference. Screen position hasn't made a difference either. Anyone had similar issues?

A friend of mine ditched his helmet because he kept hearing police noises and being freaked out!

Have you tried riding with your old lid on again? My Bell lid whistles no matter what screen or no screen, visor up or down etc.

Still have your old helmet? Take it with, get the noise. Change lid, repeat.

If still there, same speed, clutch in and coast. That will identify/eliminate engine noise.

Road surface / tyres? Try different roads.

If none of the above, wheel bearings, chain etc.

My lid whistles a bit, like you I worried it was the bike but I think it's the internal drop down visor on the shark.

Helmet whistles can come from all sorts of odd places.

It might be the gap under your chin, or around the back of your neck (if it's the helmet). If so it might be fixable with a thicker scarf?

Go on any of the Multi owners FB and websites and the 2 biggest questions are...... what helmet do you use for lowest noise and buffeting and the number one is what screen are you using for "insert different riding"

Its a huge thing with the bike and depends on a multitude of factors......rider height, rider position as in how close you sit to the screen, height of screen, width of screen , speed you ride, peaked or non peaked helmet, any spoilers on top of the screen, spacers etc etc etc

I have 3 different helmets (Old Arai AstroR, Arai Tour X4 peaked and Shoei Neotec2 flip up) and 2 different screens for my Multistrada (GT Touring high screen and tiny carbon Pikes Peak) , all have differing effects on noise, buffet and comfort.

Go and try the combinations changing 1 factor at a time and see what is best for you......i cant give you a sorted solution as what works for me might not work for you

Only ridden 1 Adv style bike, the 790 Adv, and I was shocked how much buffeting/noise there was. At 75 MPH I actually felt more comfortable on the naked 690 Duke than I did on the 790 Adv.

Not a Multi - but on a Diavel I have tried Ducati Touring screen, the Roadster Screen, and then a Puig Touring screen the size of a barn door.
The Puig buffets most and is the noisiest.
None of this helps the OP - but my one of my Arai's whistles if I turn my head - I think it is the eyebrow vents.

Hello sir. Why did you not stop for us?
I thought your siren was my helmet whistling.
I see, sir. You do not have to say anything, but......

Thanks all. I've tried placing my hands around my lid/screen etc while riding but doesn't seem to make a difference. I'll go back to the Arai next week, and failing that try a touring screen. Pity - otherthan it's a lovely bike to ride, with awesome handling.

With the GT touring screen I have on mine it protects me lovely but causes loads of buffeting for the missus when she is pillion. A normal helmet gives a bit of head wobble from that screen. My peaked Arai is perfectly steady.

With the little Pikes Peak carbon screen there is no buffeting at all but obviously bugger all wind protection at higher speeds
