And by the way, the correct quote is "The lady doth protest too much, methinks".

It's as easy to get these things right as to get them wrong. Please try harder next time. :P

I've only just stumbled across this thread. I'm going through some testing myself at the moment. I've probably been a bit foolish not to get checked sooner, as I've been having symptoms for some time, which I've assumed was BPH. But then I had a sudden onset of prostate pain around the middle of last month, so didn't really have an option. Dr asked why I'd not come in before, and I explained that the experience of testing I had 10 years earlier was so unpleasant that I wanted to avoid repeating it if possible. She seemed to sympathise with that, at least a bit. I had the DRE, urine test and then antibiotics for a fortnight. No bacterial infection, but antibiotics are apparently prescribed for acute prostatitis anyway. After antibiotics I had the PSA test. As this was normal and so was the DRE, I'm being referred to a urologist but non-urgently. I've also started on tamsulosin. In the meantime I'm still on painkillers (ibuprofen and paracetamol). I'm a bit less worried about it being cancer than I was initially, and so is my GP or she'd have put me on the fast track. But I want to get to the bottom (as it were) of the cause of the pain.

So that's where I'm at. Saga lout, I hope your treatment goes well. Someone mentioned Prostate Cancer UK and their helpline, which I know something about as I used to work at the charity for a while. The nurses who man it are specialists and could be worth talking to if you need to supplement whatever your consultant is saying.

Best of luck Scoots. The doctors do seem to take it seriously. When my PSA test came back positive my GP stuck his finger up my bum almost immediately (he took me into his consulting room first, he didn't just do it in reception :o ) then fast tracked me to the hospital. The expert thought my prostate felt normal but still sent me for a MRI scan which showed abnormalities and the biopsy came back positive. (In this case, positive is a BAD THING™). So if your doctors don't think it could be cancer, it almost certainly isn't cancer.

Get well soon.

I have my final injection next week, thank Christ. The hot flushes and cold sweats got annoying very quickly. :( I'll have a PSA test 12th October then a consultation with the hospital doctor a week later, hopefully to find out that the treatment has worked.

Thanks, that's reassuring.

I guess that was hormone treatment, that caused the hot flushes? When I was at Prostate Cancer UK a guy came in to talk about his treatment, which was hormone therapy. Someone asked if he'd had any side effects. He said no, "apart from maybe being a bit more interested in shopping". :D

A quick update for all those who have been waiting with breath bated:

I had a PSA blood test yesterday. Today I got a text: "The result of your recent test is normal. No further action is needed at this stage."

I still have the telephone appointment with the hospital doctor next week but it looks like the radiotherapy worked. Which is nice. :)

The telephone appointment with the consultant was something of an ant-climax, just confirming that the radiotherapy had indeed worked. He said I would need PSA blood test every 6 months which I was sort of expecting, presumably to catch it early if it comes back. Now I just have to wait for the hot flushes and the cold sweats to stop and abnormal service will be resumed.

Happy lout. :)

Yeah, I noticed that when it was too late to edit it. I would have got away with it if it wasn't for you meddling kids. :(
