I have hit another car- what damage to expect?

Post by Docca »

I was driving slowly down my road ( 10 mph) and went to pull in to let a speeding van go by from the other direction.

As I pulled in, there was a bit of a thud and my car bounced. I’d hit a parked car.

I pulled in to my drive ( about 50 m further down the road) and went to get a pen and paper to leave a note.

I write the note, got to the other car ( a Nissan Quishkai ((sp)) )

No obvious damage to either car. No scratches to the bodywork or hub caps.

I’ve clearly had a wheel to wheel prang. My car is absolutely fine.

The Nissans front wheels are now turned a bit to the left ( and the passenger side tyre is now slightly on the curb- assume it bounced).

I’ve left a note with my name and number - what damage could I have realistically done?

Is there any chance that I’ve caused no damage?

It’s getting late and I hope the person doesn’t need to go anywhere tonight if I have damaged it.

Thanks
Felix

Some cars can be very resilient. I watched an old guy try to drive over another car in a car park, made a right mess of his car but the one he drove into didn't seem to have a scratch on it.

It's a Qashqai, they'll be happy if it's a write off!

Thanks- appreciated. I guess I’m keen to see if there is a likelihood of no damage. I’ve just been up there again and I’m surprised there is no obvious damage.

Mrs Dazzle's Civic Type-R was written off after someone pranged it at fairly low speed outside our house. Driveshaft punctured the gearbox when the wheel was forced into the curb!

Good luck ;)

And I thought my Wife was ‘special’ having suffered the same fate from exactly the same type of accident / cause….

To be fair she had another car damaged not many years before; parked ‘yards’ off the road in our driveway when a delivery driver attempted a U-turn there; rather than another 10 yards further down in the large turning area at the end of the cul-de-sac 🤦‍♂️

Scrambled my small brain when she rung and said “I was doing the ironing upstairs and the cars been damaged” 🤣

All sorts of stuff going through my mind - what if they don’t have insurance etc.

Well, I’ve taken off the note on the windshield that had my address on it. Just my name and number now.

You're a better man than the person who wrote off Mrs. D's car, put it that way.

BTW, you hit them, why would it matter if they don't have insurance? S'all gonna come off your policy.

Probably no damage, if the alarm didn't go off you're unlikely to have broken anything, if you want to do the right thing offer to get a garage to check it out, as I don't trust anyone I'd only agree this if the garage was one of my choice.

Mrs Skub rolled backwards in a car park into the front of a Honda Civic. The Honda needed a bonnet, two headlights and other stuff. A couple of grand by the end of it all. Her Auris had a scrape on the rear bumper.

Weird things happen in car bumps. Might be nothing, might be more.

Assuming it was parked on the road, it needed to be insured to be there (can’t be sorned on the public highway), if it ain’t insured, it shouldn’t have been there, no claim to be had (possibly). Worth checking on askmid to see if it is insured, then report the bump (they came out of nowhere guv, menace to be on the road, barstewards (sic) are a taking a liberty parking on the Queen’s highway whilst uninsured etc). Possibly…

You'd better hope they don't have a serious accident due to a steering fault.

Someone did a similar thing to my old car at the swimming pool car park. Left a nice note and everything. (I wouldn't have noticed, the car was already a bit battle-scarred thanks to a hit and run Tesco home delivery van...we were sat in the car at the time, he was driving and looking at his phone. I'm not sure he even noticed!). I did phone to say thanks for the note. :D

Why? He left a note explaining and gave his number. If they chose to drive it without checking, why is that his responsibility? They could have called him and told him they needed a lift!!!

I doubt there was any damage so nothing to worry about tbh.
The note with your name and number though has probably blown off and into a phone box, expect some fun phone calls 😂

So blokey has just contacted me

Said it felt rough as driving to work today

He took it to a local garage and mentioned some of the things you’ve mentioned in this thread

Said he has an invoice for £900

Might easily be a mates garage. I would want a 2nd quote before parting with any cash.

£900? I think I'd let the insurance company deal with that.

(Probably just disturbed the tracking).
