Laptop screen cleaning

Post by Noggin »

I suspect I've asked this before but can't find it or remember the answer :( :(

I have a MacBook and the screen is yucky!! Looks like a bunch of kids have played noughts and crosses on it with sticky fingers - weird cos I have no kids, no kids ever get near my laptop and I don't use it with sticky fingers  (the keyboard maybe on occasion, but it's not a tough screen jobbie, so . . . )

However, it does get placed 'near' a cooking area when I'm following a recipe and has probably suffered from my klutzness in the last few years

I went out and used my proper camera yesterday for the first time and I actually bought this laptop so I could learn to 'process' digital photos. But the state of the screen means I don't know if it's something in the photo, on the camera lens or a smudge on the laptop screen :( :(

What can I use to properly clean this?? I have found some ancient stuff for cleaning cameras and lenses. I have various stuff in the apartment but don't want to use something that turns out to be bad for the screen!!

Help!! My learning to process photos depends on my clean screen (maybe!! LOL)

Microfibre cloths are all I use for my Mac.

For marks that are difficult to shift I'd try a damp cloth first. Alcohol wipes for really stubborn stuff.

I use glass cleaner. Avoid getting any near the keyboard at all, but otherwise a gentle squirt onto the screen and then wipe with kitchen roll.

Been using a wet wipe almost followed by a tissue for years with no issue. Laptop, phone, TV

The screen itself is fine - it's just everything else you need to avoid. Liquids and electronics do not mix well. So whatever you use, just start gently and use caution.

If the screen's bad wait till you look at the keyboard - if it's fats from cooking it will be disgusting under there. Better to use a cheap tablet and a stand than a laptop in a kitchen for this reason alone.

The guys at work who look after our laptops use hand steriliser with water - I can't remember the ratio so I've just messaged one of them. It works.

2 parts hand sanitiser gel to 1 part water in a spray bottle does the trick.

I just use the same stuff (wipes or spray) that you get for specs from the local opticians. If it's good enough for coated lenses it's good enough for phones, tablets and laptops.

Never have found a relatively easy and quick way to get the crap out from a standard keyboard. I either try and then give up. Try and then break it. Or do neither and just bin it.

For keyboards I use those silicone protectors, then just wash them now and then.

1 Turn it off
2 light spray with regular glass cleaner
3 polish off - Not to hard, not for too long, you don't want to generate any heat!

4 Wait 10 seconds
5 Scream "how the fuck is it dusty already"
