Sports Tourers are back...

Post by IanB »

Adventure bikes are so last year.

The trusty 2009 GS will be leaving the stable soon and has already been replaced by this sporty(ish) 2017 1200RS mile muncher.

It offers me an additional 20HP, ESA suspension, up & down quickshifter, cruise control, climate control & paniers for my European trip.

It's a bit more exclusive & I might miss being a GS wanker, time will tell. Happy new bike day to me :)

It's a lot more aesthetically pleasing than those horrid fugly adventure things.

Agree its more at the touring end of the spectrum, which is just what I'm after.

Is it leccy like on an RT, or do you have to turn a knob like on the GS?

R1100S, I've owned one of those, comfy & surprisingly fast . I've also had an R1200S surprisingly uncomfy & fast, there must be something about this series of boxers that appeals to me.

I (probably only me, given the 'challenging' looks :D ) had an R1200ST...which was quite comfy. It mutated into a K12GT which was quite comfy and rather quicker.

Nice!

You say it has ESA - is that just the adjustable suspension, or the fully active kit?

The one I rode with fully active was probably the best cross-country bike I'd ever ridden. Apart from the fact that the automatic suspension din't engage below 40mph and the forks just became 'floppy/bouncy' pogo sticks with minimal damping. I think they've dialled that out now on the more recent bikes.

I'm not sure if it's fully active, I'll have to RTFM tonight to find out. All this technology will take some getting used to, to be honest having a radiator on my new motorcycle is a novelty to me!
